Subject: Studs

I couldn't hazard a guess at the number of times our players slipped over when trying to change either pace or direction or both yesterday. At the same time I can't say that I remember any of their players dong the same.

Alright, so the underfoot conditions were misjudged but shouldn't this have been remedied at half time? Do the team not carry alternative studs in case of unanticipated problems in standing up? The slipping and sliding continued throughout the second half, to our detriment.

I haven't played since before the Matabele War but surely these days studs can be changed in just a few minutes? What did those of you that still play or have only recently retired make of Sunday's catastrophic lack of grip?

We certainly seem to have a problem this season with grip (that or everyone is trying to do a Shane Geraghty nd fool the defence!) and I assume this could be alleviated by different, or longer, studs. That said, and I am sure there is someone who will know the answer, do you then sacrifice something in terms of manoeuvrability and/or pace?

Discuss.

Furthermore, now I think about it again, surely in this professional era, it's not even as complicated as changing studs. They probably carry several pairs of boots with different studs.

In my day I inherited a pair of boots with nail in studs from my uncle. Bloody lethal they were too. Everybody kept well clear of me. Can't remember the ref checking the studs before the game either.
