Furthermore, now I think about it again, surely in this professional era, it's not even as complicated as changing studs. They probably carry several pairs of boots with different studs.

In my day I inherited a pair of boots with nail in studs from my uncle. Bloody lethal they were too. Everybody kept well clear of me. Can't remember the ref checking the studs before the game either.
