to knowledge, never.

approx. 1949 thru 1951 or so. only for night games.
for certain, 1956 and 1957 for road games only. they wore the plain white helmet at comiskey park in 1956 and 1957.

it seems like from 1960 thru 1962, the "neck" (?) wasn't as pronounced as it has been since 1963. the facial features (eye, beak, "smirk" as i call it) have been basically the same. the size of the head seems to have varied thru the years, but not enough that i would note (sort of like the vikings horn).
