Yes, I think so. But I don't assume this was done in order to fool people, perhaps not even consciously.

Besides, if samadhi suspends the physiology of the body then wouldn't it be theoretically possible to live forever?

I think generally people practise yoga in order to attain some sort of inner liberation, so for them there would be no point in (physically) living forever. After achieving their goal they simply live on, and at the time of death cut the remainder of their connection to life as we know it.

Sundarar once wrote that Yogananda said that Trailanga Swami was "realized but not liberated". He was a Tantric. I am not an expert on Tantra, but in the text I had linked to one of the Vamamarga (left-hand Tantra) masters emphasized that they merely ride on the waves of eternal Shakti and that they do not know of anything beyond that. So this is in opposition to the idea of liberation - perhaps they do not feel the need for it.
