I agree.

Some gurus such as Satguru Sivamuniyaswami insist that as long as a devotee is hampered by the negative emotions of pride, anger, hate, jealousy, lust, greeed etc that his yoga must be karma and bakti yogas ubtil he gets purity of heart (chitta shuddhi). In my mind that means your prana is at heart chakra most of the time. If raja yoga is given before that it simply makes the mind a more dangerous and willed instrument to secure the desires of low 3 chakras. Sivamuniya says if the impure hearted awaken kundalini it will create uncontrolable desires also. Well, Vivekananda supposedly said that 85% on the yoga path turn out to be insincere in want they want, 10% are insane, and only 5% that start really want God.

Needless to say I think many raja yogis are better served to focus on morals, seva and especially bakti yoga.

However 8 fold ashtanga yoga steps must be practiced by the raja yogi all at once. They will likely all improve together. The yamas and niyamas wont be fully perfected until liberation occurs and you live that way naturally.

In the Rajarsi book Master writes in a letter to Rajarsi to please look after the divine devotees at Mt washington as he had to work on them for a long while ironing out their moods and karma so now they are receptive. Nonetheless, meditation performed before this time sets a good habit and karma for the future.

I was also told that kriya one is ok for people with some desires but the higher kriyas rapidly clean the low 3 chakras and if we have many desires down there it will backfire to do these kriyas.
