Dear Friends

This is a good conversation about kriya.

Guruji mostly (but not everywhere) stresses 108 as the limit as he says in the lesson that if you accomplish this number of his kriya 1 (with concentration) then (often) the current will be found to revolve itself producing bliss in the spine (and the resultant pratyahara).

He does mention the 1000 kriya in the A.Y passage and it impressed Doctor Lewis enough that on his day off and long meditation once a week he did 1000. The other days he probably stopped at 108 and the lunch meditation was at 6. This is the limit in the lessons and was told to me by his son in law.

Yogananda advised in some places in lessons for a 3 hour meditation once a week. However, in the service readings he asks for 6 hours once a week. This is asked of the monastics as well. So here we go again.

If one is to do the 6 hours, I find it hard to accomplish with only 108 kriya. Thus I asked Baktananda if I could do a second set of 108 and even more if I meditated more hours---and I surley plan to it later years as inspired by Doc Lewis. He said to go ahead if I felt good to do another set. But I already had made up my mind to do so and was determined or he would not have said yes. I was also already experimenting with it.

Baktananda was the one that scolded me for not raising 12 every year, whereas Achalananda based on his own experience advises raises spaced out with a few years. Baktananda in my experience was the most advaneced monk along with Anandamoy (who seems to be conservative). Anandamoy is a great person to talk to but is also unlikely to say anything outside lessons---but he may. Satyananda is deep in kriya he may be the exception of the indirect chelas.

So I asked Baktananda about the higher kriyas---should I get them. He said anyone that wants God should or will get them asap.
However, Durga Ma and Doc Lewis said forget about the higher kriya---Doc actually said until you do 1000 kriyas (once a week???). Kamala Silva did higher kriya only in her long meditations.

Above differences in approach show:
At a certain point I think you have to trust your own experience and intuition as much as the written word but I think you know when from within. If in doubt then follow general direction that you cant go wrong with but is obviously for the greatest good for greatest number.

About kechari, the most hotly debated kriya topic of all, Baktananda told me it will happen by itself. When the eyes are locked up without effort the tongue locks up also---so I was told by another advanced yogi in SRF. I have had the eyes but watched the tongue and did not decipher if it went up or not. This kechari thing is a big mystery to me and many others and it has cuased a lot of tussels on this board.

My own idea is Yogananda saw the benefit enmasse of teaching it compared to the drawbacks and decided there were more drawbacks. I am told by a line that teaches it that it is practiced by men to women in a 10;1 ratio as it helps get under control the sex drive (and other senses) and men are more troubled by it. Women can get devotion going in heart easier and jump up to ajna from there. My observation is that for many years SRF was composed of mostly middle aged females and most people that come to SRF are christian background and devotional.

Lahiri does say in mant places that one should do as many kriya as one can (with focus?) in one sitting. Perhaps he meant at least one sitting. But then Yogananda tells in Rajarsi book 'the one thing I ask of you is you keep up a period of meditiation each day'. Seems Rajasi also did only one session but there may be good reason I will explain.

My observation is that when you meditate many hours each day the 2 sessions get merged into one. Many go to bed at 7 0r 8 and then wake at midnight and meditate til sunup at this level. Supposedly Pranabananda, Yukteswar and Kebalanada did this and I know Baktananda did it for years as well.

But I remember Anandamoy saying if you havent turned the corner after 3 hours then it probably aint happening---om perception is what I gather he meant many years after. Once you hear that the process is effortless or near it.
