Subject: Mimesis in the Fashion World

The examples on fashion in Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World reminded me of an insightful scene in The Devil Wears Parada (a film full of the tension between romantic individualism and imitation.

The main character, though working at a top fashion magazine, is disdainful of the fashion world. When over heard mocking it at a photo shoot, her boss dispells all her notions of "rebellion" against the fashion world in her attempts to not care and not follow trends. She gives the entire history of the shade of blue of the sweater the girl is wearing, listing the various levels of knock-offs and imitation. The culture of fashion, which is entirely mimetic, entangles the whole society, even where it appears to be lost or rejected.
