This post made me think of a couple of things. First it made me think of how clothing is more than anything else an indicator of imitation, especially in jr high and high school. My school only had about 600 students total and my graduating class consisted of 55 of us; thus, if any of the "popular" girls bought a new shirt or pair of shoes that seemed to be trendy, it would not take long for the trend to ripple through the rest of the female population. Although, for the most part, the rest of the girls followed suit, no one actually ever bought the exact same piece of clothing. Sure the style would be the same, but there would be something to set them apart from the original model. This especially applied to prom time, with locally owned bridal stores, it was often kept track of which girl from which school bought which dress.

This post also made me think of a song by the Kinks. One reason I love the Kinks is because of their spot-on observation of everyday life and people, and how it is often given with a sense of humor. This song is no exception:

The Kinks-Dedicated Follower of Fashion

They seek him here, they seek him there,
His clothes are loud, but never square.
It will make or break him so he's got to buy the best,
'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.

And when he does his little rounds,
'Round the boutiques of London Town,
Eagerly pursuing all the latest fads and trends,
'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.

Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).
He thinks he is a flower to be looked at,
And when he pulls his frilly nylon panties right up tight,
He feels a dedicated follower of fashion.

Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).
There's one thing that he loves and that is flattery.
One week he's in polka-dots, the next week he is in stripes.
'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.

They seek him here, they seek him there,
In Regent Street and Leicester Square.
Everywhere the Carnabetian army marches on,
Each one an dedicated follower of fashion.

Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).
His world is built 'round discoteques and parties.
This pleasure-seeking individual always looks his best
'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.

Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).
He flits from shop to shop just like a butterfly.
In matters of the cloth he is as fickle as can be,
'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.
He's a dedicated follower of fashion.
He's a dedicated follower of fashion.
