Joe Williams - St. Louis Post-Dispatch

In the raunchy romantic comedy “Good Luck Chuck,” Dane Cook plays a guy who’s been cursed. But in real life, the comedian-turned-actor is a lucky man. Without a shred of originality or charm, this smirking stand-up has headlined arena shows, hosted “Saturday Night Live” and graduated to starring roles in movies.

Maybe he’s got incriminating photos of a very important person; but surely they can’t be as humiliating as the images in this movie.

During a game of spin-the-bottle in 1985, adolescent Charlie spurns a goth girl. So she hexes him. From that moment on, every female he touches will reject him and find happiness with the next suitor who comes along.

The grown-up Charlie (Cook) becomes a dentist (as if). When women learn about his dubious gift, they line up to be bedded. Go for it, advises his best friend, a crass plastic surgeon named Stu (Dan Fogler, who evidently was cast to make Cook look sensitive by comparison).

For a while, Charlie is in hog heaven, sleeping with beauties and obese caricatures alike. But when he falls in love with a klutzy zookeeper named Cam (Jessica Alba, who is actually funnier than Cook), he’s afraid of consummating the relationship and then losing her to another guy.

To its occasional credit, “Good Luck Chuck” is merrily crude, but it often feels like a PG-13 date movie that was re-edited to capitalize on the success of smart sex comedies like “Knocked Up” and “Superbad.”

But if you’re expecting something smart from Dane Cook, you’re out of luck.
