Well, from a legal standpoint (assuming this fictional place has the same laws as the US), I would think the baron and gateman would both be blamed for the death, with most of the blame going to the baron as he hired the gateman to kill her and as it could be argued that the gateman feared for his own life if he did not perform the requested duty. The baroness committed a moral crime, but her crime was a far lesser one than the one of having her killed. I would say the baron bears the primary responsibility for her death.
