I agree with your take on things if it occurred in modern times, but if it occurred in modern times everyone would have behaved differently. The Baroness would have got a divorce, the Baron would have done the same (or tried to kill her secretly), the friend/lover/boatman would have helped, the gateman would not have attacked her, etc. This isn't even taking into consideration the fact she would call the police.

The description would suggest the events occurred in Europe during feudalism. The Baron would be the law in his own domain. Only someone who he was vassal to (possibly a duke or a king) had the authority to intervene. Morality in that time period was very harsh on cheating wives. Her only hope would be her family since she probably came from nobility in another area.
