There are plenty of countries that still recognize royalty. I think it's a mistake to assume this is "in the past."

Even so, "in the past," there were things the Salem witch trials, the Spanish Inquisition, and the "rule of thumb," which said that a man couldn't beat his wife with a stick bigger around than his thumb. They weren't right then; they aren't right now.

If I say that I'll kill you if you stick your tongue out at me, and you pull a face anyway, do I have the right to kill you?
