Okay, then, let me just mention a couple of interesting things that could possibly serve to enhance your enjoyment of the show a bit.

In the first episode, John produces a credit card from his pocket that tells us his name is John Monad. Consider the meaning of the word "monad" in these three disciplines: religion, philosophy, biology.

The strange facility John keeps staring at is a former naval facility near Imperial Beach that locals know as the "elephant cage." The military says that it has been closed for some time, and used to be a facility for receiving radar transmissions.

Consider this statement: John is a mirror.

At the beginning, I thought there might be a good/evil dynamic going on, particularly when Linc Stark (Luke Perry) says to Mitch, "better the devil you know." But it's not about good and evil, it's all about redemption. Linc gets his and does his penance in an interesting way.

As per Mitch Yost and "spiritual illumination": Mitch may have been a great surfer, but he is probably the least spiritually illuminated character on the show. A near total poseur, although that begins to change when he reappears late in the series. Spiritual illumination is all about letting go of the ego, but until that late point, Mitch is all ego all the time. Consider that his involuntary levitation may be a message to Mitch that it's time to really learn to go beyond himself.

An interesting note about Dr. Smith: Remember the name of the title character in Robert Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Lsnd"? Valentine Michael Smith. Our Dr. Michael Smith is certainly a stranger, full of wonder, in a strange land.

Just a few things I thought you might want to think about, although I realize you're looking at the show through different eyes. David Milch is a former Yale English prof, and I am a former (non-ivy-league) English major, so I look at it through those eyes. :-)
