My youngest will be 19 in a few weeks. She has always hated to read (HATED), always done fairly well in school (As, Bs and the occassional C), but bombed tremendously on any type of standardized test.

Throughout elementary school something always nagged at me. I just knew something "wasn't right". But she made decent grades, was never a behavior problem, and was the complete opposite of hyperactive. She was able to watch a movie all the way through, always did her homework with no help, so I never once thought she had any type of attention deficit disorder. I asked teachers and they all just gave me the same line: She just doesn't test well. *sigh

Several months ago I was chatting with a friend of mine whose daughter is a senior in college. She was always just an average student, never a behavioral problem either but when she went for her college placement tests, a red flag flew up because of the way she answered some math problems. Her parents brought her to an educational "tester" (for lack of a better word), and they discovered that she had a learning disorder.

I decided to take my daughter for testing, and lo and behold, the poor thing does have a learning disability that affects reading and comprehension. The woman also suspected an attention problem, but she's not an MD, so she couldn't diagnose that. She sent us to somebody she knows who is a neurologist as well as a psychiatrist and who always uses medication as a last resort. We saw her this week, and discovered that, in fact, my daughter has a moderate level problem. She put her on a very low dosage of something (Vyvance I think). I am NOT a fan of medication and have heard all the horror stories about Ritalin creating zombies, etc... But this seems to be ok and my daughter can tell a difference already. I have not noticed any differences in her behavior, which I am happy about because I quite liked her the way she was!! And let me just say, the child VOLUNTARILY cleaned her room yesterday. I'm thinking this is a wonder drug. LOL
