Hi there, I have a 1976 340 rotax as well, I was told once that you may have to check the votage regulator as well on the machine if you have one. Little black box bolted to the body or frame somewhere near the engine that help's capture excess energy. If this is not working properly then it could be taking too much power from your machine until you hit the high rev's. Give that a try.
