Oh I totally agree. Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series is great. I really have enjoyed it so far and am looking forward to the next one. One thing though...at one point she was pregnant, then she wasn't. I couldn't figure out if that had something to do with her suddenly not being djinn anymore or what exactly happened with that. Her being a "weather girl" was pretty funny too.

Another great series of books is the Black Magician Trilogy by Trudy Canavan. I also loved Anne Bishop's Realms of the Blood, and the Valdemar series that Mercedes Lackey did.
