A few years ago we grouped children by fives and helped bring our studio closer together. This year we have grown so much. I feel it is important to keep that closeness going! Even though this is Allison and Cat's last year of competing we will always be attached to this studio. There are so many incredible memories that will stay with us the rest of our lives. I would like to help keep the feeling of love and compassion alive. Is there any one that would like to help me organize a Big sister Little sister-big brother little brother list? We matched each child with another child from each group division. Tiny-mini-jr-teen-senior. I think four to a group is good. This is a great way for them to get to know each other better. Small gifts of encouragement...that little extra cheer at competition....help with a dance step and just sharing the love of dance together! I am sure the office could give us a list of students...It won't take long to match them up!! Let me know if you'd like to help out! please feel free to contact me at gspantgos@carolina.rr.com

Tickets go on sale to the public on November 19th, but I can get some NOW. Please let me know if you are interested in attending this event. Ticket pricing is from $25-$55.

“A revelation for the ear and eye alike.” – New York Times “Classical Savion” is an exhilarating performance featuring Savion Glover, accompanied by an orchestra and jazz quartet, tap dancing to classical favorites by Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, Shostakovich and others. Glover’s imagination has brought him critical raves as he creates a concert with a string orchestra. His feet still dazzle, his body sweats with intensity, his facial expressions are as vivid as ever, and his moves define what tap dancing means today. This new-style Savion – backed by a string ensemble – brings a news understanding to percussion, tap dancing and to the anointed genius that’s pure Savion, all classical.

Ok Guys!

SET YOUR VCR'S - This Thursday 3:30 p.m. MTV channel

You can catch the Premiere of Drake Bell's Music Video on TRL

with Melissa co-starring in the Video. You'll spot her off right away and throughout the entire song.

You can then go online with MTV or call in and vote for the music video. You'll have to look ahead and get a number or email address I think you actually have to log on with MTV to vote.

Melissa will be back in NYC the first week of December and performing as an official back-up singer with the Drake Bell band on MTV Live.

The song is "I Know" and one of the songs on the new CD that will be for sale on Dec. 5th.

I can't wait until you all see the video - it is precious.

Chow for now!

IT'S A MATTER OF LIFE...
Wife, film industry were his loves
Collins worked with big stars but treasured his 57-year love story
By GERRY HOSTETLER
If you hung around the Square in Charlotte or a block north at Walgreens in the 1940s, you likely noticed this teenager. He was one of the earliest to sport the double side-welted, pistol-pocketed, pegged and draped "zoot" pants worn by the boys your mama warned you about.

Robert Keith "Bob" Collins, 77, who worked in the movie industry for 25 years, died Sept. 26 of a heart attack. He was a Central High School graduate called "Boo-Coo."

Bob was not, however, one of the boys who earned mothers' suspicions. He just wore the pants. He was on his own at a very young age and was too busy earning his way to get into much trouble.

Bob met Betty Jo (B.J.) one Friday night in 1948 at the old Armory Auditorium (where Park Center now stands). They fell in love to the music of Paul Williams and the Hucklebucks.

"He had no job when we got married," said B.J., his bride of 57 years. "He had 28 jobs that first year, but love sustained us all through our lives." The couple had sons Bobby, Darrell and Kenny, all of whom became firefighters.

Devoted to each other

"They were a sweet couple who were devoted to each other," said longtime friend Peggy Lyles. "I remember when they brought the children to church. Those boys were snazzy in their sport coats, ties and white shoes."Bob and B.J. were indeed devoted to each other. "We had a beautiful love story," B.J. said. "He wrote love letters all the time; I even found them in drawers. He wrote one just last week. I told him, `You've still got that magic touch.' "

Bob started in the movie industry as a driver, became transportation captain and later a Southern dialogue coach. When "Days of Thunder" with Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman and Robert Duvall was shooting, Bob and B.J. were lodged in the Marriott hotel penthouse in Daytona, Fla. He also was in the film as a race car driver.

Mill house to penthouse

"We lived an exciting life," his wife said. "He was a little boy from Charlotte who went from mill house to penthouse."

B.J. said Bob worked with Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover, Whoopi Goldberg and Steven Spielberg in "The Color Purple." He also worked with Whoopi in two other movies.

When Dustin Hoffman was filming "Billy Bathgate," he and Bob became big off-camera pool-shooting buddies. "Bob beat Dustin," B.J. said.

Bob also aided Jessica Lang in Nebraska when she appeared in a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie. He worked with Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in "Talladega Nights," and his latest project was "Asylum."

Movie-making was a big part of Bob's life, but that shared the spotlight with his church, Northside Baptist. He was a charter member, served in many church offices and was a member of Barry Shearer Sunday school class.

"I looked at him as a role model," said granddaughter Jessica Collins. "He was definitely my hero; he touched so many lives."

He most especially touched B.J.'s life with notes like this:

"For all the years you have been my bride, raising a family and building a life, we've worked together side by side. You have blessed me by being my wife. There are many things I sometimes forget to say, but your faith, courage and wisdom keeps me. Loving you always, Bob."

"I will miss him with all my heart for as long as I live," she said.

Rehearsals for Dennis' number will start WEDNESDAY NOV 1st at 5:-9:30 - same time Thursday. If necessary there will be an additional rehearsal Friday evening, this will be determined by how things progress this week in rehearsals. All mini classes are scheduled as usual Wednesday. Thursday all Jr/Teen/Sr leaps and turns are cancelled.

Thursday November 2

5:15 Mini Ballet

6:30 Mini Tap

7:15 Jr tap Tech combined

7:45 Jr tap

8:15 PETITE SMALL GROUP TAP STARTS

9:00 FINISH - NO SR TAP THIS WEEK

Mrs. Sue Bernath will come for Master ballet classes Dec 1-3-schedule soon to follow-we have extra rehearsals that weekend too-so we will have to be creative in our scheduling!! Classes are $20 for minis and $25 each for jr-teens and sr's. There will be a terminology lesson as well between classes for vocabulary enrichment. A $5 fee will apply for this 30 minute class for jr's and sr's.

Monday night technique classes will be changing format effective this coming week. We will utilize the rooms separately after the first 30 minutes of warm up to push choreography along on select numbers. For example-the class will warm up together as a whole-then the walls will close and one teacher will rehearse/choreograph in the other room with the selected group while the rest of the class resumes usual technique class in the larger room. This will happen from 5:30-6:30 with one group and then another group 6:30-7:30. The groups that will be selected are those that have not been started and/or are in the beginning stages. It will not always be announced beforehand which groups will work on which days/times-but seeing as all juniors and teens/sr's are present during this class-we should have the dancers we need.

BALLET MAKE UP for the week Nick Bass was in town will be held FRIDAY November 10. Mini's 5-6:15 Jr's 6:15-7:45 and Teens and Sr's 7:45-9:30.

Hey guys
I need somewhere for MaKenzie to stay Sat. night after the Halloween Party and can bring her back on Sundat for the Solo practices with Allyson at 12:00.

I have to be with Melissa Saturday night at High Point to give her title up and won't be back until Sunday about 1:30.

If someone is going to the party and then to practice on Sunday that Kenzie can stay with, give me a shout. LOL she didn't want to go to the pageant - go figure- dance is way more fun for her

Thanks and call me on my cell 704-701-3903 and I'll return the favor anytime.

Hey you guys. Drake Bell's single is now out from Universal Motown and can be requested on the top 40 stations. I emailed Kiss 95.1 yesterday and with more requests it can be requested. This is the single that Melissa is in on the Music Video to be aired (I think) first week of November on MTV. The more calls that they get about it the better. I can't wait until I can post the pictures from the CD and from the photo shoot. They are crazy. You can see the pictures on www.drakecentral.org. You have to click the pictures, then click appearances and most viewed. There are several pages as you scroll along of the shopping trip, music video clips and paparazzi pics. It is a lot of fun to see them - she is so happy and living a dream.

Also sometime in Dec/Jan Melissa will be in Teen Vogue modeling for Jovani Prom You can see some of the gowns she has modeling at www.jovani.com - then click jovani prom and click through the pages and you'll see her there.

Thanks and we'll see you at dance!

Hey Dance Family~

Melissa is in LA doing a photo shoot for Drake Bell's new CD that will be out Dec. 5th with Universal Records! She is also in the music video with the song titled "I Know" that will be aired sometime on MTV's TRL. The song will be debuted and can be requested on radio stations on Oct. 17th. That is the song in which she will be in the video. She is so excited. Drake is the singer/songwriter/actor on Nickelodeon's Drake and Josh Show which is in it's 3rd or 4th season right now and you can check it out on the Nickelodeon channel. Be sure to call in on the 17th and request the song, it is an awesome song with a Beatle's twist and cannot wait until the video is out.

Thought I'd share and hope to see you all soon~

I would like to tell the dancers working with Nick Bass how proud I am of them for their commitment to the studio. They have been at the studio every day since last Monday and will be back again today. Allison, Maddison and Taylor H. missed their high school homecoming games Friday night to work on their AWESOME contemporary number. It was Allison's final homecoming game as she is a senior this year. The kind of dedication these kids portray makes me so proud as a mom. They understand the importance of commitment at such young ages. We are so fortunate to have so many great role models for our younger dancers at WD.

Now to talk about Nick Bass...Allison and Nina, thank you for always caring enough to offer the very BEST in guest choreographers to our dancers. As parents, we were all in awe of his creative choreography he is teaching the dancers. Nick, it's easy to see why the kids are absolutely CRAZY about you...and it's not just for your good looks and charming smile! Thank YOU for caring enough about our kids to spend a week of your life in Matthews working with them. The master classes were GREAT and the hip hop and contemporary numbers are both outstanding! Personally, I can't wait for competition season!!!!

Next, I am still collecting photographs to complete another large collage for the studio walls. I have a lot of teen and senior pictures (wonder why?) and I have several junior pictures. I am weak on mini and tiny pictures and of course photos of the new kids. Here is what I need, pictures of the dancers, especially in groups featuring a lot of kids. I would like more pictures of the youngest dancers and I would really like pictures of the new dancers, even if this means someone bringing a camera next week to take pictures of the kids together in groups. I have some great group shots from the parade and several from the open house, but I have none of our wonderful new gals!!! My goal is to feature every single WD dancer on this collage. This collage will include photos from Starpower nationals in 2005 with our Victory Cup dancers and photos from the 2005-2006 season. I would prefer actual pictures in lieu of a CD.

I shipped out a lot of costumes last week. They should arrive on Monday or Tuesday of this week and we should know if everything fits by the middle to end of the week. Look for an email from me later this week, telling the names of the recipients of the checks. It was a good week with over $2000 in costume sales. I am also collecting names for the Weir Dancin' Decals featuring a dancer in a leap with Weir Dancin' above the dancer and the dancer's name below the dancer. Cost will be app. $5 per decal, it could be less if we have a large order, but many dancers already have the decals.

I would like to work on our 2007 Seniors albums in the photo gallery earlier this year. I have begun work for Allison Spantgos and Jonathan Matthews. I need bios for all of the seniors. I need photos of Taylor Miller and Holly Mason, especially your senior pictures. I would LOVE pictures of you guys when you were little ones beginning dance classes. PLEASE email pictures or bring them to me to scan and return. The more you email me, the easier for me to upload. Read the bios written by Emily, Jessica and Kimmy to obtain ideas. Write WHATEVER you want. This is your chance to tell your story of growing up at Weir Dancin'.

I need 5 TINY costumes for a buyer in Massachusetts. She would like 5 Little Patch Of Heaven Costumes. I don't have any of these costumes in my inventory.
I have sent her photographs of other this year's Tiny costumes. However, again, I have the same problem as above, I have only 2 of the orange and pink "You Can't Stop the Beat", costumes, one Itsy Bitsy Spider, one blue and yellow "Nicest Kids in Town" and 2 "Cars that Go Boom" and 2 or 3 "Baby Girl". Thanks to all of you that brought in so many costumes! You JUNIOR moms ROCK! WOW. I actually have as many as 15 of some of the costumes. Vicky Presson and Hayley Presson are coming to my house on Sept. 24 to help me get everything photographed and organized. If anyone else wants to help out, come on over. I took the day off of work yesterday to work on inventorying everything. We have 10 bins of costumes with as many as 50 plus costumes per bin. Vicky is going to organize our costumes via an Excel spreadsheet to simply this process. I am set up for Paypal to allow buyers to purchase with credit cards and my office is equipped to ship via USPS.
Please tell all of your friends to shop at our Costume Corner! There are lots of great costumes coming to the Costume Corner from Rhythm and Visions dancers. Also, there are many, many solo, duo and trio costumes from within Weir Dancin' that are also for sale. Browse through this year's competition pictures during the season and see if something is interesting, chances are it will be for sale.

Thanks again for your AWESOME response! Angie and Shay were the most organized bring me over 40 plus costumes at one time, neatly bagged, labeled w/ sizes, descriptions, target prices, etc. Thanks ladies!

Now that you know how many dances your child is in this year would you like to work the arena concessions and earn money to help pay for it? Charlotte Performing Arts (CPAC) is always looking for more parents, grandparents and anyone else 21 years or older to sell concessions. Many of you receiving this email are already working with us; please spread the word that there is money to be made with CPAC.
After proving ourselves to Levy Restaurant management, the group has its own booth on the main level at Bobcat Arena. Our managers now run the booth (just as they always have done and continue to do so at Cricket).
I have placed additional October sign up sheets at the studio near the water fountain. Don't hesitate to email any questions to me.

What a day we had on Friday!! From morning til night we cleaned, painted and improved our studio for the new season.
A major "Thank You" is in order to Mark Sheppard (man of all traits!), Tracy, Marcie & Maggie Amos, Kathy, Hayley & Logan Davis, Suzanne, Allison & Kat Spantgos, and Suzanne Edwards.
Girls, you know who you are, we want to know how long it took to get the paint off of your bodies and faces!!
Logan, you know we especially liked your purple hands!! (And we know you did as well!)
Thanks again to all of you who so graciously gave us your time and talents! We couldn't have done it without you!

Mercedes Bolden, Jalen Little, Hannah Waddell, Kimberly Lines, Morgan Carnes, MacKenzie Ceraso, Hayley Presson, Kyra Shelley, Taylor Pressley, and Faith Howell deserve a big shoutout. They just finished 2 full days of a very INTENSE tap workshop. (We now own stock in bandaides.) These guys worked very hard and have the soar feet to prove it. The weekend ended with a showcase and teacher show and "Saturday Night Fish Fry" represented the studio well. Thanks to Miss Erica for getting them hooked up with this amazing experience and thanks to the parents who spent their days hanging out at Spirit Square to make sure our kids were safe.

WOW! I scanned pictures of our junior and teen costumes that Phyllis and I had purchased of the groups and emailed them to my database. The response has been overwhelming. I hope you are all getting your costumes ready to go, because the buyers are ready to buy them. I also need pictures of mini, tiny, petite and senior groups for the web site. I will scan and return them to you. Once I have the pictures, I will upload the 2006 groups to the web site. Will also take solo/duo/trio pics to add to web site. If you are selling those costumes, will use the pictures for the Costume Corner, too.

I am sorry I couldn't be at the studio to help out yesterday. I worked, worked on costumes and took Taylor and her friends to her 1st high school football game. I can't wait to see what you all have done!! Exciting! I am also collecting photos for a new collage. Please get them to me in an envelope at the studio. Thanks!
