Mars starts using animal products

Some of the UK's best-selling chocolate bars, such as Mars and Twix, will no longer be suitable for vegetarians.

Also affecting brands such as Snickers and Maltesers, owner Masterfoods said it had started to use animal product rennet to make its chocolate products.

Masterfoods said the change was due to it switching the sourcing of its ingredients and the admission was a "principled decision" on its part.

The Vegetarian Society said the company's move was "incomprehensible".

'Extremely disappointed'
Masterfoods said it had started using rennet from 1 May and non-affected products had a "best before date" up to 1 October.

Rennet, a chemical sourced from calves' stomachs, is used in the production of whey.

It will now also be found in Bounty, Minstrels and Milky Way products, and the ice cream versions of all Masterfoods' bars.

"If the customer is an extremely strict vegetarian, then we are sorry the products are no longer suitable, but a less strict vegetarian should enjoy our chocolate," said Paul Goalby, corporate affairs manager for Masterfoods.

The Vegetarian Society said it was "extremely disappointed".

"At a time when more and more consumers are concerned about the provenance of their food, Masterfoods' decision to use non-vegetarian whey is a backward step," it said in a statement.

"Mars products are very popular with young people and many will be shocked to discover that their manufacture now relies on the extraction of rennet from the stomach lining of young calves," it added.

I originally became veggie as I was against the inhumane meat industry / factory / intensive farming (organic and free-range meat wasn't much of an option back then) and I couldn't face the idea of eating dead animals.

I personally can not justify killing an animal for my pleasure - I do not need meat to survive, therefore I can do without it. If I was in a survival position, perhaps I would end up killing something to survive, can't say I'd enjoy the experience... but in the here and now I do not need to... so I don't :)

I'm ovo-veggie at the moment because dairy products don't agree with me anymore. (I guess I asked for though - I kept wanting to go vegan but loved cheese too much lol!) I do eat eggs now and then, but I only eat free range eggs (we had a school trip to a battery farm when I was really quite young, it was hideous and put me off battery eggs for life.)

Doesn't mean I think 'it's wrong to eat meat' - nor do I take to telling others what I think they should eat... although I do believe that free range / organic (or preferable living completely free) is more respectful and healthier than intensive / factory... for the animals AND you!

Yeah, your probably right about the free range/factory farming thing... I think that people continue to eat meat because they don't really appreciate what goes on in intensive farming..however, i work for an agricultural college that has a pig unit. i have been present when a pig has been shot ( a bolt is put into its skull) i have to say that the first time i saw it I had to stand outside.. although the animal was dead it continued to thrash around for about 5 mins.. very disturbing.. I don't know why i continue to eat meat..I'll have to think about it... i suppose I can somehow switch off..and the more you see these things the more desensitised you become....

I am a meat eater but I wouldnt say my meat was killed for pleasure. We only eat meat about twice per week and I only buy organic meat.

I have gone veggie on a number of occasions but I used to be very sporty and found my energy levels werent the same if I stayed off meat for too long.

I wont deny that thats the only reason I still eat it - I do like meat, particularly a Sunday roast. Im of the understanding that if an animal has a contented, well cared for life and a humane death then its okay in my book. Afterall, we used to hunt and eat meat to survive many many years ago.

I do disagree with the distruction of vegetation to make way for cattle corals to support the demand for fast foot outlets though. Personally, I wouldnt touch any fast food with a barge pole, apart from the odd bag of chips at the seaside that is.

Its good to see that more and more organic options are popping up in restaurants these days. I love to eat out but have usually opted for veggie meals as Im never sure where the meat products have come from.

Anyway, meat eater or not, like you WW, I wouldnt preach either way. Its a personal choice and I respect all of you for whatever choice you make.

Blessings

Lil

my dad is a keen 'game' shooter... i.e: in season he pigeon shoots. pheasant, rabbit, hare etc, it's all 'natural' meat and it all gets eaten by dad!!!

I am veggie. Eating meat isn't necessary for me therefore if I did it would boils down to indulgence. That means for my satisfaction and pleasure and greed. I cannot find any other justification. To take life for that reason is something I feel is unethical. To cook meat for others at the expense of an animal when they do not need it, I could not do. Hence my children are veggie but I work very hard at ensuring them a protein rich diet.
Blessings Mel.

I eat organic meat sometimes (fish) but I try to be mindful of the whole chain of beings that have sacrificed for my pleasure. When I allow my heart to indicate to me the path to take, I do not want to eat meat and feel dreadfully unhappy doing so. But alas I do and it is for my own enjoyment. I am working on my shortcomings.

I am not vegan however and cannot see it happening any time soon. It upsets me that there is all this hormonal engineering so I try to only drink organic milk and cheese...nature wouldn't put an animal on the planet that relied on milking to stay well! The dairy industry is scary. Eggs so long as they are not fertilised I consider OK.

There is something about needing to give voice to the voiceless (abused mistreated animals) by voting with my feet. Of course it's not possible to live without causing harm, but by relatively kinder dietary choices, I feel I can drastically reduce the harm I cause to other living creatures and to the environment.
