Hello and blessings to all. I hope everyone had a good Yule, however you celebrated it,. I was just wondering if any of you have been able to get into your gardens. I have an Allotment as you probably know, but this weekend is the first time in months that I have been able to get out and do anything.

Seriously though, i decided to rip up the garden last year. so i'll have more herbs, few water features and less maintenance means more time to enjoy it. Blessings

Blessings

I can't really go and start introducing alien plants into the woods though which takes the fun out of gardening and growing stuff.
I suppose i'll just have to make do with watching the entire woodlands grow ;)

Hello SoR

Good to see you in the Garden again. I hope you are well.

We have some green compost growing on our veggie patch over winter and are discussing what crops to plant where for this year - wont be long before we will be planting again. We will probably grow the usual potatoes (which so far have been very successful - earlys and lates), green beans, parsnips, courgettes, garlic, tomatoes and onions. The sweetcorn wasnt very successful this year and the peas never made it to the pan! (they got eaten by moi!). Our strawberry patch has gone rampant over the autumn/winter months so we are hoping for a good crop. Tried some peppers a couple of years back but they werent too successful, so I might try them again this year.

What are you planning to grow this year?

Lil

Hi SoR - good to see you in the Garden :) how are you?
Well... we have the lovely big garden down the road to work on and the owner wants lots of lovely fresh veg (and has let me choose a spot to grow herbs on too!!) and plenty for the wildlife. The veg patches were turned over and cleared up just before Yule so this week I'll be doing a little bit of weeding and I've been planning what to grow where... lots of seeds to order in this week. So far on the list for definate : pots, toms, peas, beans, onions, shallots, cabbages, cauliflower, lettuce, leeks... with some green manure plants and possibly also spinach and sweetcorn. There will be plenty of wildflowers around too and many herbs - since we started working on the garden the birds have started coming back, so lovely to hear them singing away and they're getting very sociable too. Before Yule we also made a new compost bin area and plenty of log piles and leaf pile borders for insects, bugs, hedgehogs and the likes. I really must get some photos up to show how much the garden has already changed!
In my own little garden... well it's a courtyard with a couple of little flower beds (which the cats have made full use of!) but I'm looking forward to making it a proper little garden! We had cleared out the flower beds (they were full of rocks and building rubble when we moved in) and filled them up with lovely compost, but now I'll have the lovely job of clearing up after the cats - but I have some gholly sprigs to lay over parts of it to deter them lol. (We also have a raised decking area so we can sit out at night and watch the stars) :) It's going to be a very busy year here - but gardening is always good!
What plans have you got for your allotment this year Sor?

I've hardly looked at my garden as I'm busy inside painting and making new doors, among a few other things.

Anyway with the gales it's safer inside..too many branches and trees flying about outside. So I have some tidying up to do...and I had a about 20 hefty cows charging round the garden at midnight a week ago so the lawns are a real mess, thankfully they didn't harm any shrubs etc.
The snowdrops are starting to flower though...and the hellebores.

Well, it's been so long since I was last on here I can't even remember what my forum name was! So this is a new me!

I got into the garden properly for the first time yesterday (Sunday). It was a beautiful sunny, clear day up here in the North, perfect for digging and watching the robins and blackbirds hunting for worms. I've been digging beds over ready for the veggies. The onions were in before Yule, the garlic is next, and I've just bought peas, rocket, lettuce, toms, peppers (maybe a bit optimistic up here!)and potatoes (first and second earlies - can never get enough of them and they do such good for the land). It's all very exciting!

But I'm a little concerned that this winter the weeds are thriving when they should have been killed by the frost by now...

x
