Author: W'ntyr -- Garneth (G'rein)
Subject: *Hums*
In reply to: Elaini (Rishanath), Wylan, and Elatyr 's message, "I hate my life" on 14:00:05 07/24/05 Sun

“W’ntyr, I don’t like the way you’re going.”

The bronzerider raised his head and scowled at G’rein, meeting the other man’s dark eyes impassively. “Oh?”

Trust someone with a dragon like Grenith to remain totally implacable. Seemingly impervious to W’ntyr trying to ignore him to make him go away, G’rein had been sitting in the large weyr for a while, waiting until he said something to spark the rider’s attention. It would appear he had found it. “No. I’ve already watched one friend go down the drain and need everyone’s help to pull him back up. But you? I won’t see that happen to you.”

“Why not?”

“Because you’re my oldest friend, my brother, W’ntyr. You’ve always been there for me, always supported me, put up with me flirting with you…” This startled a smile from W’ntyr, and G’rein persevered. “We’ve known each other all our lives, and the day you can’t trust me is the day Pern falls.”

W’ntyr ran a hand through his grey-tinged hair, and sighed deeply. “I know. But G’rein…I’m not drinking, or anything like that. I’m fine.”

“You are not! You’re far thinner than you were three months ago, you barely eat a thing, and you don’t even try to flirt, or even speak to women at all. Now I know what “lovesick” means.”

“Huh.”

G’rein changed tack. “When M’red…hurt…me, you told me I had to get on with my life and accept what had happened, and not to dwell on it. So now I’m telling you to try and get on with your life, and accept what happened. If Elaini overreacted to something you had no control over, then that’s her fault. Not yours. You can’t eat yourself up with guilt.”

When W’ntyr didn’t reply, G’rein gave up and left the room, heading off to his own weyr. The bronzerider slumped back against the bed, closing his eyes. He missed Elaini. In his mind she had every right not to forgive him for what he did, even though it was normal. Part of him – some small, resentful part – told him that she had no right to separate his children from him like that. But he, being W’ntyr, just accepted that she was doing what she thought was right. ‘Gar, where is she?’

Garneth hadn’t spoken in a while. He just communicated in images now, unless he really had to use words, like when he was talking to a dragon he didn’t know. He projected an imaged of a weyr to W’ntyr, and another image if its location. Tinged with pain as always, Garneth’s communication made W’ntyr cross the room and fling his arms around the bronze neck, the two sharing a simple moment of closeness before W’ntyr left as G’rein had done, heading towards Elaini’s weyr.

He knocked on the door with a hand trembling with nerves, thinking belatedly that maybe G’rein had a point when he said W’ntyr was thin. “Elaini? Are you in there?” He called, looking down at the floor.
