What a day! I had a little taste of what it would be like to have a natural disaster hit and it was scary. I've only been through one hurricane that I can remember and it was pretty minor. There were two earthquakes that hit the Big Island this morning around 7am, one 6.5 and the other 5.8. They were strong enough we felt them here on O'ahu, actually I woke up because my bed started shaking. The power went off virtually across the whole state and we started hearing they weren't sure how many days it would take to come back on. Then they started throwing around water rationing and shortages because the pumps that fill the reservoirs are electric. Not good.

After a dash to the grocery store to stock up on supplies, much like you do for a hurricane, it was back home to wait and listen to the radio some more. They were telling people to stay home and off the roads because it was raining hard and of course traffic lights weren't working. About 2:00 the electricity came back on. I was never so relieved to hear the air conditioner rumble. You could hear cheers and clapping around the whole neighborhood. We live a few miles from the electric plant so we were blessed to be the first area to have power restored.

What struck me the most was the mercy of God. There have been no reported deaths, no tsunamis, and no prolonged powers outages as feared. There is some property damage on the Big Island but it can be fixed. It may take awhile longer to get all the power back, but I think Hawai'i was given a miracle today. I know I'm thanking God for it. :)
