As the world's top two concert promoters announce their intention to join forces, concertgoers stand to lose.

The $350 million acquisition announced Wednesday will bring HOB Entertainment, the operator of the House of Blues clubs, under the umbrella of Live Nation, the Clear Channel Entertainment spinoff that is North America's biggest concert promoter. The deal brings the concert business even closer to a monopoly, and the effect on ticket prices and artistic diversity could be crippling.

Live Nation already has a lock on the nation's biggest concert venues; it owns 150 sites across America, including most of the arenas and amphitheaters that host the most lucrative shows in the $3.1 billion a year industry. Its parent company, Clear Channel, is also the largest owner of commercial radio stations in America. For years, the conglomerate has effectively controlled the forums most valued by working musicians for exposure: radio airplay and live performances.

If there is a chink in Live Nation's chain of domination, it's at the club level. That's why it has been seeking to buy out House of Blues for several years.

Live Nation sold more than 29 million concert tickets worldwide last year, according to Pollstar, more than four times as many as its closest competitor, House of Blues Concerts, at 6.9 million. But Live Nation doesn't have much of a presence nationally at the club level; it is in these smaller 1,000- to 1,500-capacity venues that promoters have traditionally sought to develop the artists who will become arena-filling acts in future years.

House of Blues' 10 clubs nationwide are prime players in this smaller market; of the 14 biggest-selling clubs in America last year, seven belonged to House of Blues, with its venues in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., (229,000 ticket sales) and Chicago (213,000) trailing only the privately owned 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. (269,000) for best-in-nation status.

Hope you all have a wonderful holiday! What are you all doing today--celebrating or relaxing?

We're heading out later today for the annual 4th of July party at a friend's lakeside home. It's an all day event, culminating with their incredible fireworks display over the huge lake after it gets dark. The view along the shore is incredible--you can also see the fireworks from several nearby theme parks refecting on the water, so it's quite a sight (and sound).

The boss just received his royalty statement for the 4th quarter of 2005 (yes, they are a bit slow reporting), and his music is certainly getting around. Here's the updated total TV Credits list which was just added to the DMP Music for Media page.

Some of these shows may have used Dax tracks for backgrounds, and a few probably during titles or credits. His music is being carried by a couple of different music libraries who specialize in network TV placement, so it's liable to show up anywhere--at anytime.

The current BMI statement reported that Dax had tracks placed on A&E Famous: Ashley Judd, and Mondo Magic (also A&E), as well as Discovery's FitTV Ultimate Goals program and How Clean is Your House on Lifetime. Have any of you seen those shows?

JC was on KIIS-fm this morning with Ryan Seacrest. His single, which was cowritten with Justin, is called "Until Yesterday" and is hopefully due out in August. Album to follow in the fall. JC talked about the other track that was leaked, the general direction of the album, being one of People Magazine's 50 hottest bachelors, and answered other gossip related questions. 'SexyBack' Going to Radio 7/7/06

NEW YORK, June 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Jive Recording artist Justin Timberlake will release the follow up to his 7 million worldwide debut release Justified; FutureSex/LoveSounds on September 12, 2006. The first single "SexyBack" will ship to radio on July 7, 2006

"SexyBack" was co-written and co-produced by Justin Timberlake, Timbaland and Nate Hills. FutureSex/LoveSounds was co-written by Justin Timberlake. The producers on the album include Justin Timberlake, JAWBreakers, Timbaland and Rick Rubin.

Justin will kick off an international promotional tour in July starting in Europe and Japan. In August he will embark on a US club tour previewing the new album. Venues and dates will be announced shortly.

June 25, 1966, was a day that changed my life. That was the day I met John. :-)

I was 19 and he was 20. I think it was truly love at first sight--or the closest thing to it I'd certainly ever experienced. Yes, we were very young. He had just returned from a year of Army Reserve training in Virginia, and I was an art student home for the summer in Springfield, IL. We met at the wedding of mutual friends, so maybe that's what it was. The setting was perfect for romance. Whatever it was, after all these years, I can say it seems to have turned out quite well.

We were inseparable for the rest of that first summer, even talking about marriage on our 2nd date--we "just knew" our future was meant to be spent together. Then in late August, I returned to art school in Ohio for the following year. It was excruciating to leave him. We didn't have email then, or web cams, but we wrote letters to each other daily (yes, I still have them!) and we were able to budget one phone call every few weeks. By the time summer rolled around again, I knew I wouldn't be returning to school the following year--we couldn't stand another year apart.

John and I were engaged in August 1967 (I can't even remember the date or the actual proposal--we had been planning our marriage practically since we'd first met!). We were married on December 30, 1967.

Tomorrow will be the 40th anniversary of the day our lives changed forever. :-)

�Earlier this year, after much soul searching, Kevin Richardson came to us and told us that he had decided to leave the group and pursue other interests. He gave his blessing to continue the music without him.

Saw Billy Ashbaugh Last Night -- Janelle, 20:07:07 06/17/06 Sat [6]
He's playing a few tour dates with Brian Littrell in support of his solo Christian album "Welcome Home." When the curtain opened, he looked familiar to me, and then it clicked! I tried snapping a couple pics, but he was hidden in the unlit part of the stage. So, they didn't come out the greatest.

Now, I'm just curious if Billy Mann was also part of the band because someone looked a bit like him, and I missed the intro. I didn't know he was part of Brian's album, so I wasn't even thinking to look for him. Plus, I figured he's incredibly busy with Teddy Geiger.

  - Thanks for the review and link to your pics, Janelle. Sounds like a fun night! Dax mentioned a few weeks ago that Billy was playing with Brian. I didn't realize his wife was supposed to be on one of the flights. Wasn't one of the road crew guys for BSB or 'NSync on one of the flights? I seem to remember that. A trip down memory lane -- Lynn, 18:55:05 06/17/06 Sat [5]
I watched the 1998 Disney special today--our home video footage, not the broadcast version. It was a little "shaky" but really fun to see how young everyone looked, and to revisit those energetic early days.

During the concert footage not shown on tv, Dax was introduced by JC as the "baby of the band"--at 20, he was by far the youngest musician. He was so skinny back then! His jaw surgery had been only 3 weeks before the taping--he was still "wired" together and on a liquid diet. He'd lost over 20 lbs by then, and he didn't have any extra lbs to lose even before the surgery.

The live concert was taped at Disney-MGM Studios in Orlando on May 23, 1998 (the original taping date was written on the videotape case), and then it aired on the Disney Channel all summer I think. I believe it's regarded as one of the main reasons for 'NSync's meteoric rise in popularity in the US.

Now I have a box full of "For the Girl Tour" videotapes from Germany to watch--many of them taped from the edge of the stage. And, I also have tapes from a couple of US tours, before the 'NSync organization stopped allowing family videotaping. The rest of the tapes might have to wait for my retirement! I know there's some good stuff on them--I think we even taped the Tupperware show when Britney first opened for 'NSync. Who knew where she was headed? I certainly didn't!

They certainly have grown up to be handsome young men. As far as Britney, I would have loved to have seen her performing at a Tupperware show.   - Busta, from what I remember, this was in a colliseum or theater in Louisville, KY, and all the bands who'd ever played this venue signed a huge wall in the basement. Of course, the NSync guys all signed the wall, then their band members signed it too. The boss decided to not only sign the wall as NSync's keyboard player, but to also "immortalize" his old band, Starbelly. That's pretty much the story! Of course, maybe "Captain High Pants" will stop by and add his $.02 since he's the author of the graffiti. Have you read the captions yet in the Scrapbook album. An Educator's Story

I stumbled across this 5-year-old story yesterday, and wanted to share it with you all. Pretty amazing what's out there in cyberspace! I sure hope we can reconnect with "Doc" someday. We haven't talked to him in years, and he was such a major influence in Dax's music career. He became a mentor for our son at the age of 12, when Dax first picked up the phone to call Peavey Tech support and was transferred to Doc. That first phone call lasted about 2 hours if I remember right! Doc was so patient and genuinely interested in helping a young musician learn MIDI programming--and he had a very willing student on the phone, with a LOT of questions. As the years went by, Doc became so much more to all of us than just a tech support guy. He became a true friend.

A gifted educator touches so many areas of a person's life--whether a regular classroom teacher or as I've shown here, even a technical support teacher on a long distance phonecall. I know we have teachers on this forum, and I just want to say thanks for all the hard work you do. It cannot be repeated enough. You really DO make a difference in the world.

- Awww, that's a sweet story! Doc seems like a great guy for giving a little kid a chance and continuing to believe in him. I had a success story this year that almost got me teary-eyed when I told the student how proud I was of him. He was a senior student consistently earning low D's from me. 4th quarter (when senioritis sets in for all), he buckled down and was doing A work. It was the hardest material of the year, and he said it was so much easier. If only he would have come in for help 5-mins here and there throughout the year. I even overheard him offering to tutor his friends! Amongst all the things that seniors have going on at the end of the year, he tried re-learning a whole quarter's worth of info, and had a successful final exam. With his new found confidence, he told me he was going to spend his first couple weeks after graduation studying to re-take the math portion of his college's placement exam. We're visitng DaxGram, and helping her get settled in her new condo. I think she's going to love it here. What a beautiful place. It's like living in a tropical resort--in the desert southwest! There are palm trees and and flowering shrubs and bushes everywhere. Her condo is overlooking a gorgeous swimming pool--there's a beautiful golf course nearby with a wonderful 8 mile walking/bike trail all around it. I just got a very disturbing phone call from my aunt and sister. Apparently my cousin's baby (she's ONE year old), somehow pulled a pot of hot chocolate off of the stove and it has burned her face and chest really, really badly. Our hospital here is flying her to Augusta, GA to a burn unit. Please pray for her and the entire family. She's the most beautiful, sweetest, baby girl. I don't know how bad it is, but it's obviously pretty bad if they're having to fly her to a burn unit in another state. Just please keep her in your prayers.

Who's next to leave? I'm afraid it might a "boys club" after tonight. I really like Katharine, but I think nerves (and the pressure) are getting to her, and at this stage, that's perfectly understandable. Last night's Elvis theme was not her best. Chris and Taylor seem to be thriving on the pressure, and Elliot is stepping it up too. My guess is that Katharine goes tonight, and Elliot next week, with Chris and Taylor the last two standing. I still think Chris will be the winner, but at this point, any one of the last four could pull it off.

  - Hi Janelle! Actually the boss isn't much of a baseball fan (you're right, the Cardinals would probably have been his choice though)--just the recipient of concert swag. Some sporting goods company gave a whole box of oldstyle baseball shirts to the boys in the band. Dax often brought swag home from tours (clothes, watches, portable electronics, etc.) and lots of gifts from fans. On long tours, he would have to ship home an occasional box of stuff collected along the way. Every day was like Christmas or a birthday. The giant sax was in New Orleans, so I don't know if the hotel it was painted on even exists anymore. It was close to the superdome, so maybe it's still there. Hey there all! Wow, it's been forever since I've been around here, but I haven't forgotten any of you, and even though I'm not here and don't post, I still think of all of you often.

I'm back in Oregon by way of Massachusetts from Seattle. The last couple of years have been simply crazy; but I wouldn't change them for the world. Even the not so good stuff, because it just makes me stronger.

I've been working at a casino for the last year, and on Easter Sunday I started the best job in the place: Dealer! I know six games, and plan on learning more as classes become available. It's very fun, and way more entertaining than the food and beverage department where I was working. It really makes a difference when you get up for work and you don't dread going in. I love dealing, and most of the people I deal to are super nice, even when I'm taking their money.

I'm so glad to see all the familiar names are still here. Hopefully I'll be around more now. Oh, and Boss, sorry I missed it, but Happy Belated Birthday. That picture of you as a baby cracked me up. Coulda just reached out and pinched your little cheeks... Anyways, take care all, and a Happy belated Easter to everyone as well!

After Queen appeared on this past Tuesday's episode of American Idol to coach the remaining eight contestants--who all sang Queen songs this week, with varying degrees of success--many assumed the band would perform on Wednesday's results show, as this season's previous coaches (Stevie Wonder, Barry Manilow, Kenny Rogers) have done. So when Queen was a no-show last night (in their place, viewers got a Queen medley performed by the finalists), some fans jumped to the conclusion that the band had bailed because they were displeased with how their songs were performed (some would say mangled) by the contestants.

This speculation can likely be traced back to the on-air bickering between Queen guitarist Brian May and finalist Ace Young, regarding Young's suggestion to turn "We Will Rock You" into an R&B number. (Said May, flat out, "I can't do that to my song.") But now May himself has addressed the Idol rumors in the "Brian's Soapbox" section of his official website, BrianMay.com.

"Well, no - there was never a plan for us to perform on the AI show," May writes. "We only wanted to do the coaching thing, (done at our sound-check in Anaheim), to give as much as we could to the participants ... ... not go into the TV studio and 'advertise' ourselves ... I'm happy about that decision."

    - Glad you liked it, Brooke. I thought it was pretty interesting--although not really much of a surprise the way the video editors cut it up to make it seem more dramatic. Gosh, now it's really getting tough on AI. Chris might be able to pull it off, but Paris and Katharine are really strong. I think they will be the final three--if that happens, it could be any one of them as winner in my opinion. I don't think Ace can hold on much longer, but he is a cutie.       - My favorite is definitely Chris. 110% without a doubt. I just watched his performance tonight and it was great!! When I heard the theme was Rod's songs, I was so excited. Then when they said it was his Storybook songs, I was a little disappointed. I love Rod (if you've never seen him perform LIVE, well his ROCK stuff, you should definitely do it!). Back in January Oprah's camera crews filmed all day at the school I teach at(which is located in a fairly affluent Chicago suburb). Some inner city kids came to our school and some of our students went into the city. Turns out that over the past few months, the premise of the show has changed a bit. It was supposed to just be our two schools with the students returning to Harpo Studios to do a live audience panel discussion. I don't think they got the results they desired, so they had to expand their idea.

Part I of a two part series aired this morning. We were given no notification. The show reruns here around 11pm, so I'm going to watch it then. Supposedly our school and a math teacher I work with were shown in the first 15-minutes. Part II airs tomorrow(Wednesday), and we don't know if we'll be shown or not.

I'm quite interested to see how all the footage was edited. The objective of the show was clear, and our students reported Oprah's crew trying to tell them what to say on camera even though they disagreed. I have some other thoughts on the topic, but I'll keep those to myself(especially since the show no longer features us).

Well, just thought I'd let you all know in case it re-airs in your market tonight and to tune in tomorrow.

- Just watched Tuesday's show, and it was interesting. They mainly focused on the rather newly constructed school and the different resources that our students have. I won't deny that we have some nice equipment, and large facilities. What Oprah failed to mention is that our school has close to 4200 students (and is rapidly growing) compared to their 1500. So, the amount of time a student gets to use a computer or workout equipment can be limited. As always, there's more behind the scenes than is apparent in short clips. In terms of the big picture, there's no denying we're better off than many schools, and I'm very grateful.     - I recorded Part II, and just got around to watching it. Yes, various charter schools were given most of the camera time the second day. They had a panel of students talking about the smaller high schools. I definitely believe that smaller schools can provide students with a better education and put on more pressure to perform. Even when registering for college classes, I had a good idea of how the class would be run if I signed up for a small lecture hall vs a class of 15 students. However, without large financial backing, small schools can't necessarily provide a high quality, well-rounded education of electives. "Power of Prayer"

Don't like to push religion on anyone, so if your not religious stop reading now.

I believe prayer helps alot in our world. On that note I have a prayer request for you. Our good friend Robin Wiley was diagnosed with cancer last year, and has been fighting it ever since. She has not been doing well lately and I would like it if you could keep her in your thoughts and prayers. She means the world to me and the guys , andI consider her the 6th member of *NSYNC. She gave us our sound and was there from day 1! I would not be singing if it were not for her. She is one of the most talented singer/songwriters ever. Many of you already know who she is if you followed our career closely. She also wrote "I Thought She Knew" and arranged every accapella we ever sang. Thank you for doing this, and i know it will help her out alot! God Bless....

- Hi all! We are fine. We were prepared for the worst, but all we really got was heavy rain, heavy winds, & thunder & lightning. It never got as bad as expected. We had brought in all kinds of things out of the yard to protect b/c a few years ago our house did get hit by a tornado and things were thrown into other people's yards. But yes, there were several counties in TN that had horrific damage. I heard that there were 11 or 12 deaths, I think. It's terrible...we just had tornadoes last week in West TN and lost 10 lives with those. It's so awful. My thoughts and prayers are with those families. Favorites from last night's Country night on AI? I wasn't completely wowed by anyone, but maybe that's because I kept dozing off--or maybe I was dozing off because it wasn't that great of a show. :-) Chris continues to impress me, as does Katherine. Although Bucky was in his element with the genre of music, it might be time for him to go. It's getting tougher each week, as everyone left is talented and seems deserving. Any predictions for the final two? I think I'm going with Chris and Katherine.

- My favorites were Chris & Kellie last night. Although Kellie gets on my nerves, she was in her element. "Fancy" is one of my favorite Reba songs, so I was excited to hear her sing it and she did great. I'm also a HUGE Keith Urban fan, so I judged Elliott & Chris very closely and I thought Chris did awesome! I've seen Keith perform that songs many times and I have to disagree with Simon...it is NOT boring. Country night is usually one of my favorites, but I just wasn't impressed overall last night.
