Subject: Who's watching Superbowl?

It's an American tradition, a rite of passage. I remember going to my first Superbowl party at the age of five. And yet, I'll confess, football on TV is BORING! Give me a live game any day, it's so much more exciting to see in person. Even a game that pits the best two teams in the NFL together rarely holds my interest. I wonder how crowded the mall will be today?

But then I'd miss the Superbowl commericals and I love them. If advertisers are going to spend millions of dollars to get people to watch them I'll oblige. It's the one time of year I don't mind not muting commercials.

And halftime is usually pretty good, well except for a wardrobe malfunction in the recent past but we won't go there.

So, who watches Superbowl for the game? Anyone else watch it for the commerical? Who are you rooting for? I've been known to occasionally get into the game if it's really good, otherwise I'll read a book. My sports mad neighbors hoot and holler, or groan, and I can figure out the game without even looking up.

T-minus 4.5 hours until kickoff.

[> The DaxFam household has mostly watched the SuperBowls past for the commercials--and there have been some great ones! However, this year, we're rooting for Seattle (since many members of our family live there), so we'll be watching the game as well as the commercials this year. The halftime show never really does much for me--it always seems fake and overblown. We have lots of food ready for snackin' and we're planning to enjoy the evening, while watching Seattle win! :-) PS--I can't wait for the Winter Olympics to start! -- Lynn, 15:25:44 02/05/06 Sun [1]

[> I'm definitely watching the Super Bowl - for the game! I LOVE football. And I'm pulling for Shaun Alexander & the Seattle Seahawks. Shaun is the leave MVP and played at the University of Alabama (ROLL TIDE) for 4 years. He was OUR MVP long before the NFL even knew who he was. I'm not going to a party...just watching it at home alone. T minus 59 minutes til kickoff! GO SEAHAWKS!! -- Brooke, 17:02:16 02/05/06 Sun [1]

[> Yep, I'm watching. Also cheering for Seattle. As a Packer fan, I'd like to see Holmgren win. Unfortunately the Seahawks' opening field goal messed up my numbers in a game of squares. -- Janelle, 21:02:22 02/05/06 Sun [1]

[> All right overall the game and the commercials were pretty disappointing. I did enjoy the FedEx and Jackie Chan Diet Pepsi commercials. I think they were my top two. Otherwise, it was pretty much a wash. Even the Stones disappointed me. I was expecting...better I guess. What did you all think? -- Malia, 22:55:06 02/05/06 Sun [1]

[> [> I was disappointed because as a football fan I expect NFL officials to know what they're doing...and the officials last night blew many calls. I've never been one to say a game was "fixed", but I will say that it sure appeared that the NFL & the media REALLY wanted Pittsburgh to win...it was a perfect story. As a football fan, I was apalled at the calls made. I saw 2 commercials that were funny (both Ameriquest commercials). Other than that, I wasn't very interested. I wasn't interested in the Stones halftime performance to begin with, so I made a snack during halftime. So I didn't even see the show. The national anthem sang by Aaron Neville & Aretha Franklin was horrible, too. Overall I just wasn't very impressed with the Super Bowl this year...lots of disappointments. -- Brooke, 21:31:18 02/06/06 Mon [1]

[> [> [> The message inside backs up my opinion of the officiating...this coming from Pittsburgh's QB. He says, "I didn't get in". They got a free Touchdown. Grrrrrr..... -- Brooke, 20:16:42 02/07/06 Tue [1]

Roethlisberger admits: 'I don't think I got in'

Before David Letterman got to shave Ben Roethlisberger's beard Monday night, he got the Steelers' Super Bowl-winning quarterback to admit a little something that might rankle Seahawks fans even more.

Roethlisberger told Letterman that he didn't think he scored on a controversial play in the second quarter that put the Steelers ahead for good 7-3. Roethlisberger dove toward the end zone but didn't appear to get the ball to touch the goal line. But officials on the field signaled touchdown. "I told Coach, 'I don't think I got in,'" Roethlisberger told Letterman. "But we were getting ready to go for it on fourth down anyway, and I would have run it again. So we would have found a way to get in."

The play infuriated Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren and has provided Seattle fans plenty of fodder for their fury over the game's questionable calls.

Referee Bill Leavy upheld the call after a replay review, and Holmgren then upbraided Leavy on his way off the field at halftime.

Holmgren walked over to Leavy, a fifth-year referee calling his first Super Bowl, and could be seen angrily telling him, "It wasn't even close."

Later on his Late Show appearance, the Pittsburgh quarterback got a shave from Letterman, finally ridding himself of the scraggly light brown facial hair he's been growing since the Steelers lost to Cincinnati in October.

"I was so mad that we lost the game," Roethlisberger told Letterman. "I kind of went into a depression and didn't shave and we ended up winning the next game. And I am kind of superstitious — just a little bit to people who know me — but we won that game and I said I am just going to keep it going until we lose and we kept it going.

"I don't really like the beard you know. But we were winning so I had to keep it going."

Letterman's deadpan reply, "Really? Honestly, I think it looks like a million bucks."

Roethlisberger became the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl, when the Steelers defeated the Seattle Seahawks 21-10 on Sunday night. He passed for 123 yards and ran for a touchdown.

"The worst part about winning the AFC championship game was that I had to keep (the beard) for two more weeks," he said. "I didn't want to do that."

After the interview, Letterman asked a woman from Pittsburgh who was in the audience to help him shave Roethlisberger.

"You want to take a little off?" Letterman asked the Steelers' fans.
