This is now my fourth week and I have made a total of just over $42,000.00 and it's still coming in rapidly. It's certainly worth $6.00, and 6 stamps, I have spent more than that on the lottery!! As a physician-MBA, I can tell you that everything in the healthcare field requires some sort of certification after formal training in order to get job. I'm sure, at first, physicians laughed when the specialty board exams came out. Although not required by law, a physician can't get a job without board certification and it is sometimes used against them in a malpractice case if they don't have have certification. Would you hire an accountant who is not a CPA? Would you hire a lawyer who has not passed the bar exam? Read the hand writing on the wall. As one of the first Certified MBAs, I can attest that this is the wave of the near future. You would be hard pressed to get hired as an MBA if you are not certified.

It's a very good idea. There are so many MBA-programs available everywhere in the world. Everyone who has a MBA should take the test and show what they can. A good objective meassurement for every MBA holder. Than it will be possible to compare all MBA-programs objetively.

(American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business) so
it is proven that some of those MBA-Programs are also of
excellent quality. And quality is all what counts.

The town hall meetings went very well. The discussion was very substantive, and I doubt I can cover everything that was discussed, but the following are the "highlights":

Hopkins appears to be pursuing a "Centers of Excellence" model that entails several niche MBA & MS/ITS programs, many of which are tailored to one or more of the 4 campuses:

Baltimore: Increased focus on the Business of Medicine program, and a Joint MBA/MPH degree is being fianlized with the Bloomberg School of Public Health. A Real Estate/Seniors Housing concentration is also being discussed (Berman Institute?) This will be the only such program in the US, with a focus on international Srs Housing as well. Biometrics and Medical Informatics, and Knowledge Management programs are also being planned.

Columbia Center: Marketing programs seem to be popular on this campus, with Occuaptional Development & HR being another area of opportunity. Of course the traditional MBA/Mgmt degree is popular as well.

Washignton DC: Finance is a very popular MBA concentration on this campus, and JHU wants to focus on an International Business concentration for the DC campus as well. The unique Center for Urban Entrepreneurship and Minority Leadership under the direction of Dr. James Calvin was discussed some as well. I beleive SAIS and SPSBE are negotiating on a joint MA/MBA program (the first forray into a full-time MBA program). This will be a 3-yr program and applicants will need to be accepted from both the SAIS and SPSBE schools, possibly a 2003 timeline. It was also mentioned that JHU will soon begin a fund raiser campaign to expand the DC facility as well.

Montgomery County: JHU will Continue to focus on the MBA/concentration in ITS and the MS/ITS programs due to the campuses strategic location in the heart of the east coast "IT corridor." There was some breif discussion about negotiations about joint SPSBE courses with the Engineering school, etc. The new INFOSEC concentration in Information Technology Security should be a success, and Dean De La Vina feels that telecommunication security issues will become particually important in the wake of 9/11, etc.

SPSBE hopes to hire 5 more full-time facilty this year, and the most recent addition to faculty is Dr. Lindsey Thompson, who will teach Business Ethics (or how not to Enronize your company..;-)

JHU has "chosen not to be accredited at this point", but they are evaluating two parallel tracks to accredidation of the MBA program. The European accredidation format is being evaluated, and it appears the Hopkins format may be similar to the European model (blended faculty, etc). Secondly, the AACSB organization is currently re-evaluating its entire accredidation critera to better fit the directions of MBA programs across the US, and it appears they are moving more towards an "output metrics" criteria rather than "input metrics" criteria. There will be draft proposals with a comment period this spring/summer, with final changes to be published-probably in the fall. I would suspect Hopkins will re-evaluate the new AACSB metrics at that time and move forward when applicable. I and many other students were excited to hear about these developments, but I also think we will also need to be patient as these things take a few years to sort-out. (The JHU MBA program was launched only 30 months ago, but a lot of progress is taking place under the direction of Dean Lynda De La Vina)

Dr. De La Vina also briefly discussed JHU's marketshare of the MBA programs in this geographic area, and she shared some favorable data regarding GMAT scores of JHU students relative to the other local institutions (however this GMAT data was internal info only, not for puplication).

Overall, the town hall meetings were informative, and the message was that Johns Hopkins has several comparative/ competitive advantages, and the institution is in the process of developing several highly unique and important business and technlogy programs. Financial Management II is the same thing as CFT, but it is what the general MBA takes. If you are a finance major you take CFT. I believe JHU is trying to strengthen their finance department.

All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away, after you get the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds for each newsgroup! **REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE! 1) Does JHU have any plans to become a ranked University in the next couple of years? Do you think it's likely that it will become a ranked school?
2) What is the time commitment for two classes a semester? is the first semester at Hopkins more difficult?
3) Is there a strong Hopkins alumni network?

Student Loans are based upon a fraudulent monetary system. All it will do is make you a debt slave for the rest of your life. I haven't ever been able to get a job because this fraudulent system won't let me have my
credentials/grades. Please go watch the movie "Matrix" to give you some idea of what is really going on.
For example, did you know there is a WARNING label on fluoride toothpaste? Why do you suppose that is?
Go take a look. Kind of makes you think doesn't it? Why do you suppose that's on there? Hmmmmmm!!!!
Perhaps we can sue them in a class action lawsuit to desolve this tyranny and get compensated.
Anyway, I would like to suggest you copy all of this information to a diskette for latter reference.

I have a quick question for anyone willing to answer. On which activities do you believe the JHUMBAA should concentrate its efforts. Currently, we are concentrating on speakers, student panels, networking events, and recruiting. Any additional ideas?

We definitely have to get the administration more focused on the current students, and getting them involved in the process of planing on for the future. At the Town Hall, working with the current students seemed to be a very low priority. I'd recommend pushing to get a student representitive on as many of the committees as possible, someone who can report back to all, so that everything we hear isn't filtered to put a smiley face on it. A lot of the things at the Town Meeting were overly optimistic, and spinned positive without confronting any of the negatives.

I would encourage you (and any other prospective students) to attend one of the upcoming Town Hall meetings to learn more about the JHU programs. Although I anticipate the discussion will be more MBA focused, there might be some Marketing folks might there as well.

The Columbia, MD event will be Monday, March 4th, 6:30 to 8pm
The Washington DC event will be Tuesday, March 5th, same time

One note, most of the JHU graduate students are working professionals and go the school part-time, personally I think their feedback enriches the program, but on the downside their less of a sense of a "cohort" group of students as compared with traditional/full-time programs.

I am considering the MBA program at Hopkins along with others and I am wondering about the reputation that it has in professional circles. Granted it is a fairly young program so I wouldn't expect it to me mentioned in the same breath with Wharton, Stanford, or Harvard; but there is some clout to the Johns Hopkins name so I'm curious how well the degree is received when its time to shop yourself around.

I graduated from Hopkins in 99 with a business degree. It was fine and I got a good job. Howrver, Hopkins is no Wharton or Stanford. You will be making a substantial investment in time and money, buyer beware. Hopkins is very average.

I would contact the Dean of the Hopkins Business program for more information before you decide.
