I don't know if this has been suggested, but I battled foreign ankle pain, and it even extended down to make my heel hurt. I read that if you are wearing backless, mule-type shoes with any sort of heel, your calf will become exhausted with having to steer your foot after a time and something will ache. My pains were sometimes a calf ache, then the back of my ankle and heel, and even my arch, all at different times. There are gel insoles that adhere to the sole of backless shoes which may help. This might not be your case, but not wearing backless shoes 5 days a week did the trick for me.
