My husband and I have 2 silky terriers, a male (15)and a female (13). The female was waking us up at least 3-5 times each night. No reason, just wanted to go outside and look around. She slept with us, so we were always exhausted. Our male was also losing his eyesight and hearing and would bump into things if it was dark. Before our son was born in 2003, we discussed it with our vet and after scolding us for letting the dog sleep in our bed, he suggested crate training them. With a new baby coming, he said it would give the dogs a place of their own and help them to feel safe. We did not like the idea at first, but gave it a try. Seems to have worked as both dogs sleep through the night now. Still working on the 3-year-old son though.
