A/N – the challenge was to write a story that involved Harm and aviation.

Harm walked into the afterschool care center knowing full well he wouldn’t find his son inside. This was confirmed by the teacher with a glance outside and a smile. “In the tree” was all she said, but Harm knew exactly where his son was and what he was doing. The air wing from a returning air craft carrier was arriving today and Matt was in the tree house watching them land. This was the reason he was picking up their son instead of his wife.

Flashback to earlier in the day:

“Harm, can you get Matt today?”

“Yes, I can pick up Matt.”

“I just can’t, not today.”

“I understand. Do you want us to pick up dinner?”

Mac was quiet, Harm waited. “No I’ll make something when I get home.”

“We should be home by six unless you want us to pick up dinner than it will be six- thirty.”

Mac was quiet again, and again Harm waited. “No, I think I want to cook tonight.”

“Then we’ll be home by six. I love you.”

“I’ll see you both at six.” Another pause, “I love you too.”

When Matt was born Mac expressed a firm desire for their son to be a lawyer or a doctor, anything but a pilot. Harm knew deep within his son’s DNA was a fourth generation aviator. However he wisely kept this to himself. As their son grew Mac made sure he was exposed to all sorts of careers, doctor, fireman, policeman, paramedic, lawyer. Once Matt expressed a strong desire to be an Indian chief, but it was just a passing phase. He always came back to wanting to be a pilot, like his Dad. Deep down Mac knew the truth, Rabb men flew planes. What Harm knew and he figured Mac hadn’t considered yet was there was a good possibility their son would be a Marine pilot. His mother’s DNA was just as strong as his father’s.

“Hey Dad did you see that?” Matthew’s eyes were glued to the landing aircraft.

“See what, Matt?” Harm really didn’t need ask as he knew exactly who was landing and what they were flying.

“It was a whole squad.”

“Yes I know, time to go home Matt. Mom’s waiting.”

“But Dad they aren’t all landed yet, I still see some up there.” Matt was still looking up into the big blue sky watching as the planes lined up to land. Of course Harm knew there was no way they could watch them all land, as they would be landing well into the night.

“Can’t stay today, but how about we drive home around the air field, then you can see the ground crews working after the planes land.” Harm loved that his son was a future aviator; however Harm also knew all too well that things happened and sometimes the future didn’t always turn out the way you thought it would. Harm was working diligently to make sure Matt knew there was more to flying that just being the pilot.

“Okay Dad,” Matthew jumped from his perch in the willow tree landing just in front of his dad.

“The carrier docks tomorrow, your mother and I thought we might go see it arrive, would you like that?”

“Cool.” Matt had seen ships come in before but he never tired of it.

“Time to go.” Harm held out his hand but instead of taking it Matt’s hand was taking off and making landings. Harm chuckled, he use to do the same thing when he was Matt’s age.

The drive home was full of questions, something Harm had come to expect when there was heavy activity at the airfield. Something Mac was also aware of and the underlying reason she had asked Harm to pick up their son.

“Dad, what’s it like to fly?”

Not the first time this question had been asked, however Harm still thought about all the answers he could give his son. The first time Matt had asked the question it was Mac that reminded Harm all future pilots, even a Rabb, needed to take baby steps with their aviation education. She reminded him to keep the answers simple. The three of them had flown together many times. There had been trips to California to visit grandparents, and trips to Washington DC to visit the memorials. But Harm knew what his son meant; flying in a pressurized cabin wasn’t the same thing as flying. So his answer become one Matt was now very familiar with “You know what it’s like to swing high on a swing?”

“Yes”

“That’s what it feels like to fly.”

“Dad, when can I fly with you in Sarah?”

Harm knew this would be his next question. Again Harm remembered past conversations with Mac. ‘Harm I accept that our son will one day fly but can we please go slowly, let me get comfortable with it before you take our son into the wide blue yonder?’ So it was agreed on not an age but a height before Matthew Harmon Rabb would be allowed in the air with his father. Of course before Mac suggested that height she took into account her son’s father, checked the top end of the height scale for an age she was willing to accept and then she added a few inches. Harm did not object.

“Gotta grow a few more inches son.”

“Can we measure me when we get home, I feel taller.”

Harm chuckled to himself; Matthew had insistent on being measured just that morning, “sure son as soon as we get home and you give your mother a hug and kiss.” Not that Harm had to tell his son to show affection to his mother, Matthew was a very loving son, however he tended to get side tracked when aviation was the topic of conversation.

The car ride around the airfield was as expected, Matt had lots of questions about planes, flying, pilots and Harm provided the usually answers. Matt never tired of asking or listening to the answers. By the time they arrived at the house Matt had stopped asking questions, Harm thought he might have fallen asleep.

“Matt, were home.”

“I know Dad.” Matt replied as he jumped from the car zooming all over the yard like a fighter jet.

Harm shook his head, sometimes Matt actions were even too much for him and he loved to fly. “Don’t forget to give your mother a kiss and an extra long hug, she’s had a really long day and could use one of your big hugs.”

Matt ‘flew’ into the house by way of the back door with Harm not far behind him. Matt ran straight to his mother and proceeded to give her a big hug, then proceeded to ask, “Mom, did you know there are dinosaur tracks in Arizona? Can we go sometime and see them?”

After Harm recovered from the subject ‘whip lash’ he had just encountered, he smiled and shook his head; maybe their son was going to be a lawyer after all.
