(continued from a previous post)

I did not anticipate the traffic level that we have seen for Wisconsin Winterfeis registration. The traffic at the website (while it has been open) has been well in excess of ten times the peak loads we have seen for other feiseanna. We have hosted a few large capped feiseanna over the last year, but this one is even more blessed than any other in terms of loyal following.

Some of you have questioned the lack of information forthcoming from us. We were at a feis this weekend and tabulation of a feis is always a very high priority. My past experience with large capped feiseanna did not prepare me for the issues that we experienced. We opened Indy Feis for registration during a feis last year and did not experience nearly the level of traffic as we did this weekend. Travel after the feis (for a day job) required that I be incommunicado for a critical time in the registration process. The travel was arranged long ago with the thought that Winterfeis would already be closed by the time I had to get on an airplane.

I have been in contact with our webhost and, as I noted in a previous post, they suspected that we were being subjected to a Denial of Service attack. In reviewing the web logs, I do not believe this to be the case, but they continue to check into it. For those who are not fluent in such matters, this is the result of many, many simultaneous requests to a website maliciously intended to overload the system to the point where legitimate users are unable to access it.

All of this down time has impacted some other feiseanna on our website, including registrations for the Southern and Western Region Oireachtaisi. I will be in contact with these organizers to determine if we need to modify any registration rules to offset the problems that I caused.

Thank you for your patience with us as we try to sort this out. I realize that we have received quite a black eye as a result of these problems. It is deserved, but we will work hard to restore your faith and trust in us.

Sincerely,
Joe Sottnik
FeisWorx
