I slowed the truck as I reached the gravel road, my arm lazily hanging out the open window. Lush green oak trees shaded the long narrow driveway leading around a bend and out of sight. I let out a sigh as soon as the shade touched my skin, giving it a break from the harsh summer sun that had been abusing it all day. Woods all around me I thought of the dream home waiting for me around that bend. I had just been by in the past week working on it not knowing that I would return to it so quickly. Everything was set. Like I told Keith, about the only thing I needed to do was hang up cloths. I rounded the bend and my eyes rested on the beautiful house. It was completely white in exception of the dark green shutters and roof, with a large porch that wrapped entirely around the house. I had dreamed of living in a place like this since I was a little girl. Beyond the house lay sprawling, acres of land, wooded and cleared. It was the perfect place for me.

I parked and hopped out of the truck with a renewed sense of energy and excitement. Keith pulled up as I was unlatching the tail gate. Tag whined at the open door of the truck. I quickly walked over to the door to lift him down. I had forgotten that he was afraid of heights because he was so short. He leapt from my arms as soon as he was close enough to the ground, and ran to greet Keith. Keith chuckled at the squirming little quirky dog headed his way. I walked back to the tail gate and sighed, I had brought more of my life along with me than I had thought. Some of theses things were part of me and I just couldn’t let go of them. Keith walked over smiling. O God that smile could light up the night, and it sure as heck lit up my world. I wondered if he had smiled like that to anyone other than me. What was I thinking, of course he had. He stopped beside me and waited for me to hand him something. I put my house key in his hand and asked him to unlock the door. He jumped up the steps two at a time and walked strait for the glass doors. I picked up a mid-sized box and opened the back door of my truck and pulled my guitar out. I walked up onto the porch and handed Keith the box and walked inside ahead of him leading the way up to my room. You play, he commented nodding to the guitar slung across my shoulder. I said I was chasing dreams, I replied with a sweet smile. We reached the top of the stairs and headed down a long hall way into a baby blue and brown bedroom. I set my guitar in the corner. Tag came running in as Keith was headed toward the bed to set the box down. Tag ran in front of him and tripped him the box went flying and sent its contents scattered across the floor. O God, Why did it have to be that box, I said aloud as I went to pick up the things that had fallen out. Keith walked over and a sly smile spread across his face when he saw me nervously trying to hid the lace and other intimates back in the box. He reached for one to help me pick up. But I got there first. His hand rested on top of mine and he looked into my eyes and seemed to be wondering what I would look like in that particular piece of clothing. I pulled my hand out from under his. And stuffed the last piece back into the box. “I think I’ll wait until I’m alone to put these away” I said. Common there’s more in the back of the truck.

After we had brought all the boxes in from the truck, we set to work putting all my crap away. Cloths were hung up and precious mementos were put into their place. And yes certain cloths were put in their drawers.

We headed downstairs into the kitchen where I made us something to eat, Keith had brought in one of his acoustics he had in the back of his car. He left it laying on the couch, as we sat down at the bar to eat.

It’s a nice day outside, he said, and I think I can see a hammock out back. He nodded out the back doors to a huge rope hammock supported by two huge oaks that I had set up last time I was here. I smiled as he took my hand and led me out the doors. He balanced on it and waited for me to clime onto it. I sat cross legged across from him as he stretched out on it. He sat up slightly and grabbed my hands and pulled me gently up beside him. I could smell his cologne, it was so intoxicating. I looked into those ocean blue eyes and he leaned over and kissed me gently beside the lips and then it happened. I was lost, and I doubt I would have come back if it wasn’t for the creaking of the rope, that held us up. I heard it snap and Keith and I fell to the ground. Me landing on top of him, Of course, but it seemed like he didn’t notice we were now all of a sudden on the soft grass. Thunder rolled and lightning struck and rain came pouring down soaking both of us. Keith, I said, I cant do this, I just left my boyfriend this morning. I don’t want to use you to get over him. He nodded, knowing what I meant. Your single then, he asked smiling. I laughed. Yeah, I said. The rain started coming down hard and we thought it best to head inside.

I lit the fire place as he started a riff on his acoustic. I grabbed mine from upstairs and came down to him with his shirt off sitting cross legged on the couch. I went and sat on the floor at his feet with my back leaning against the couch at his. We played riffs together for a while and he taught me a bit more about playing than I had already known.

That night a fast friendship was started. A friendship that would survive the test of time, jealousy, anguish, contentment, victory, and defeat. A friendship that was destined. A friendship that would last for as long as time itself. A friendship that just might develop into something more.
