Holly - be happy your station is back. I am happy for you and hope it does well. I don't claim to be an expert, I do have a love for radio and it's inner workings. Go to the New York Radio Message Board and you can read all about it. If you go to Bobshannon.com, it will link you there. Bob is a frequent poster, as well as many radio professionsls. The advertisers call the shots. The word they use is age demographic. If you are over 50. you do not appeal to advertisers. A station that caters to this age group, gets less money in advertising. That was CBS fm's problem in it's later years and led to the format change. Message boards like this reflected the outrage of the listeners and led to the firing of CBS radio chairman Joel Hollander. The new regime, led by Don Mason, sees this as an opportunity to create good will and remove some of the tarnish off the CBS name. A few weeks ago they started a simalar station in San Francisco. They label it "Classic Hits" and never mention the word "oldies" as not to offend the advertisers. They specifically say they are playing 60's, 70's and now 80's. They are phasing out pre '64 music. They are bringing in new disc jockeys who have a younger following and will attract younger listeners. A station can have hugh ratings (overall listeners) , but if it does not have the right age demos, it cannot get top advertising dollars. If only older people listen, they will pull the plug again. You need younger people listening. It is a fact of life. My parents listened to WNEW am, which played standards. They got too old and the plug got pulled. Ten years from now, they will kill Q104 who caters to 40ish people new. I hope the station succeeds for the sake of all the people on this board, They deserve it. I only went to Sirius a year ago, right after thee other oldies stations died - Kool 96.7 in Stamford, Oldies 97.7 Poughkeepsie and KB Buffalo. The truth is the only place you can find pre '64 is on very small am stations, like WREF in Danbury or paid subscription services like Sirius or on a cable music channel. Judging by the passion of the posters here, they will hve no problem with attracting alot of older listeners, but they will need an influx of younger listeners, which hopefully Mr.Lee and Mr. Causi will provide. You're right, Holly! I am over 60 and disappointed that the doo wop crowd is being pushed out of the loop. I'm not saying blow up the new station. It is what it is and that's it. As long as people like you support the station, it stands a chance. I'm glad you enjoy it and sincerely hope it does well.
