Hi Chris
Thanks for setting the record streight for us beginners, not only are you entitled to moan, but from the sound it's REQUIRED. ;-) It is a real pisser when people let you down when putting on events, I have had a tiny bit of experience with that and it not only causes stress, but you also feel let down.
A couple of genuine questions, is affiliation with the likes of the IGSA necessary, do they help with insurance, sponsors, etc.??? or is it more to do with world ranking points? you seemed to manage Avimore very well without them.
Although having a huge race like Avimore each year and really promotes the sport. To be honest tho a series of say 6-10 races dosnt need to be anywhere neer that scale, tho fat a series closing race with series podium would be sweet.
With regards to the cost of races, i guess i was a little pre-emptive when saying £40 was too much, yes it isn't cheap, but with the likes of mountain bike races u are usually guaranteed 100+ racers. I do think a properly organised UK series would attract quite a few racers, as long as the events are held in places that are easilly accessible. Yes hill climb tracks are usually a bit short, but they are often found in easily accessible places, and being short you don't need as many bales ;-)
I also think that before (this is probably prety obvious from you point Chris) any practicle work is done everything should be done on paper, costs, rider estimates, provisional dates for events, marketing stratagies, etc., etc., etc.... this way it is far more likley to get sponsors. It's like when you want to start a business, you don't just go to the bank and ask for a loan, you need to have a highly detailed business plan.
It is with this stage that those of us with fresh enthusiasm (and some brains) can help, I would be more than willing to cold call potential venues, sponsors, councils, etc, etc, I have experience of this and enthusiasm is something that rubs off on people, making it more likley that things will happen.
With regards to people letting you down setting up the event, thats a hard on and requires a lot of trust. Proper prior planning will help tho, if every one knows what to do and when a few months in advance it is far less likley for that we(?) would be let down.
Whadda ya recon then, how would you feel about getting a proper race series proposal together and then see where it goes from there? whats the harm?
Thanks again
Joel
