So, it seems my birthday present from the powers that be was a dead laptop. (I'm typing this on my iPhone.) This evening I closed the lid on my perfectly functioning 17" MacBook Pro, went home, opened it and it was dead. Now nevermind the fact that this is my work machine and this is a real problem for work next week, the biggest issue is that I have no way of watching the BSG finale, or the supposedly game-changing episode of Dollhouse or the resolution of the Terminator two-parter. They were going to be one of my birthday treats tomorrow morning. One thing Apple are crap at is repairs. It could take weeks to get the macine fixed and in the meantime I'll have to rent a replacement which will cost a small fortune and I'll lose days of work just configuring my development environment. This is a total disaster. And I'm missing the BSG finale! Arggggghhhhhhh ....

I'm a contractor, not an employee. Which means I'm paid a lot more, but any shit that happens like this is my problem not theirs. Although it turns out that there is a spare iMac in the office that I can use while my machine is being repaired. It's going to take them five days just to tell me what is wrong and how much it will cost to fix it, and God knows how much longer before I get it back.
Trouble is that it is also my personal entertainment system -- it is my Hi-Fi, my DVD player and my TV. Man, I'm going to have to watch French TV, a fate worse than death.

My friend Jelena is a Whedon fanatic so she watches Dollhouse, but she is away in Amsterdam for the next few days. I know plenty of people in Britain who watch Terminator and BSG, but no one here.
I'm actually being sneaky and am downloading them in the office right which we're not supposed to do. I'm gonna come back tomorrow sometime and watch them. I've throttled the download and upload speed so no one notices if they come in, but it means they won't finish until late tonight some time.
