(The entire series of events beginning with the evening before had set him completely off balance with everything that was normal in his life. He had felt like he was losing part of himself when he'd gone out the night before with Haylie, the part of himself that had stood guard outside his heart had suddenly decided it was a good time to take a vacation and left him wide open to her. And then.. this morning when he'd been overwhelmed with her he had suddenly found out he would be losing his partner too.. it was just a lot of change for him to accept. Her hand felt so right in his, like it was supposed to be there, and he had found himself unconsciously leaning towards her as she had leaned into him, her hand wrapping around his bicep in a way that made him smile. He felt her eyes and looked down at her, feeling the uncommonly warm sensation in his chest again at her smile, and for a fleeting second he was going to kiss her.. but then Shay had walked in and stolen the collective breath of the room's occupants in a way that only she could have done.)

(He hadn't been able to properly prepare himself for the sight of her so happy in her dress, looking so beautiful and so in love with him that he could read it in each subtle shift of her eyes and the lilt of her lips. When she stepped up to him, he held her gaze and finally let his eyes move over her face, his hand squeezing hers gently in a reassuring way. Through the long haul, he was there for her now. He heard Cmdr Courtland clear his throat and framed her hand between both of his since her other arm was tight to her chest. He smiled at her lovingly as he watched the tears mist in her eyes and took a deep breath before he spoke.) Shay, for as long as I can remember you have been my best friend and since then the only woman I have loved. I can think of no better way to honor our love than by the vows we make today. I promise to love and care for you and I will try in every way to be worthy of your love. I will always be honest with you, kind, patient, and forgiving. But most of all, I promise to be a true and loyal friend to you. (He tilted his head just a little, as though he had completely forgotten that anyone else was there with them as he spoke to her.) I love you.
