Gee, Michael, that's quite a switch!

From: "The Bottom Line -- NO POWER PLANT FOR DRACUT"

To: "I will sit back and watch what happens, and then I will make my complete decision."

If you were an elected official, you might be accused of flip-flopping or pandering. How can you come out with a headline like that, an all-caps, declarative statement, and then say "My education on power plants is not up to par."?

Well, the fact is my education on power plants is up to par. The people in this town elected me and the other selectmen to make these decisions. That's the way the zoning by-laws work, and what's more, one of the 1998 ballot question specifically asked if this decision should remain a selectman special permit. It passed two to one. The way to change this situation would be to pass a new by-law (there are ways to do that) or elect a new set of selectmen (there are even easier ways to do that).

So I won't be taking any action to place a referendum question on the next ballot. That would be passing the buck. And such a ballot question would be the duty of people who oppose the plant, not those who support it.

If the majority of people in this town do not currently support the power plant, adequately regulated, how is it that Doug and Warren got reelected in 1999, I got reelected in 2000 and Jim and Jack got reelected in 2001? Without so much as the power plant being raised as a controversial issue in any of the three races?

I've said this before. This forum is fine, I suppose. In between some pretty silly nonsense, there is some good stuff -- and people get to blow off a little steam. That's good. But this forum is not part of the democratic process. If you or others really want to have an impact, you'll have to step away from the keyboard and step into the fray officially. To the extent you do not, people like me will continue to serve, and we will continue to make these kinds of decisions. And most of us will not have our minds changed by arguments that do not make sense, or arguments based solely on emotion or clever forum postings.
