Naturally,

Thank you for sharing such a sensitive and thoughtful post!

Since first seeing this I have thought about it many times. I cannot imagine anything worse, personally, than losing a child and I feel tremendous empathy for the families in Dracut (and elsewhere) who have had to and continue to face such tragedy. The idea of a memorial to Dracut's children sounds like a wonderful idea.

There certainly are pros and cons to locating such a memorial by the school based on the considerations you have so carefully addressed. But let me share some thoughts...

With a focus on celebrating the short, but brave and important lives of the children and teens we have lost, there are strong messages that could be sent to the students of Dracut:

1. A constant reminder of how important children and teens are to the people of Dracut.

2. A constant reminder of how much parents (and families) love their children and teens, even though kids may question that love during difficult times - and how difficult is has been for those families and friends left behind.

3. A constant reminder to children and teens as to how precious life is. This can be particularly important during the turbulent and confusing teen years.

For the unfortunate children and teens facing illness today, it is a reminder that they will not ever be forgotten, regardless of what happens. At least this is what I would like to think, but I never had to face those fears at that age. I could be way off base here.

Also, the memorial could stay alive by serving as a centerpiece for an annual children/teen day in Dracut where the focus is on celebrating and honoring our children - those we have lost and those with us.

But this is just one perspective. The key perspective would be from the students in Dracut. Why don't we ask them how they feel about this and get their inputs on how it would be most compelling. I bet they will provide us all with some interesting insight. And it engages them in the town process, which is so important at this point in their lives.

Celeste
