Am I the only one who sees it? "See past the spelling and grammatical mistakes." See past it to what??? That it's okay to graduate children who can't compose a term paper without misspelled words, run-on sentences, punctuation errors, and, well, let's just face it, plain old gibberish? I'd be willing to bet that the majority of people against the MCAS test are the same people who think we shouldn't keep score at children's soccer games. After all, wouldn't want anyone's feelings to get hurt. And don't even get me started on ebonics!! This is life people and without taking every step we can to make sure our children are ready to face the challenges ahead, we are hurting them more than helping them. We've got to stop coddling them sometime and break them away from mommy's breast. (That ought to get some really fun feedback).

Furthermore, to contradict something Nimby said previously, it is about who is smarter. Let's face it, when we went to school there were some students smarter than others. That's a plain old fact of life too. If the MCAS can help identify those who are behind everyone else, then it is up to the teachers and parents to help those kids get up to speed. Let's not just keep passing them along to the next grade so they become someone else's responsibility! Let's make sure they're ready to be productive at the next level.

Now before Nimby, or someone like him, goes off on me again, I never claimed to be smarter than anyone. If my tone is condescending, it is not meant to be. I've never even been close to being a straight A student, but I've gone far in my education and I am damn proud of that. Proud of it because I busted my butt to do it. The pride you should get from a job well done. The pride our children should feel when they make it to the next grade or level. Sure, I'll make typing errors in here at some point, and I'm sure someone will point it out now, but you can be sure that I've at least checked and double checked my comments before I hit that send button. And if I was starting a conversation on the validity of the MCAS tests, I would certainly want to make sure I wasn't that "walking, talking, typing billboard" for why we need them in the first place.
