Subject: Re: Health Protection Fund aka Alcohol Tax Bill
In reply to: Ronald J Kolek 's message, "Health Protection Fund aka Alcohol Tax Bill" on 18:09:24 06/12/01 Tue

Here are a few I thin ought ot be asked of Rep. Garry. Good luck with the debate, I think it's a valuable community service.

1) According to the Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling, nearly 300,000 Mass residents have experienced gambling problems. Is it not hypocritical of the government in general, and Ms Garry specifically, to foist another tax on the citizens to combat addiction while simultaneously exploiting another variety of addicts with the State Lottery?

2) Tax Freedom Day is estimated to be around May 11th this year. Given Ms.
Garry’s co-sponsorship if the bill, can we to conclude that she is of the belief
that Massachusetts citizens are currently under-taxed?

3) A recent study garnering national media attention concluded that children in
day-care were shown to be more aggressive. Whereas the basis for the
alcohol tax is, in part, to alleviate addiction’s ill effects on children, should we
not also consider a surcharge on day care costs in order to fund programs to
mitigate the ill-effects of day care? Is there not a societal problem that can’t
be addressed by raising taxes and funding programs? Surcharges on candy
to combat juvenile diabetes, surcharges on Nintendo systems to combat
childhood obesity. Why are addicts getting this preferential treatment?

4) Is it the role of government in a democracy to burden the producing segment
of society with numerous taxes in order to support those who, through their own actions and choices, have caused their own plight?

PS sorry about the screwed-up formatting!
