Dear Usui-san,

Please, allow me to disagree with you… I’m afraid you are not well-informed about the president Lula’s political deeds in Brazil. Putting that way, let me point out some misunderstandings in your letter:

a) Inflation

It was not Lula who has lowered inflation. Inflation in Brazil has been low since the previous government, which introduced the present currency (called “Real”).

b) Debt repayments

In fact, Lula has scheduled debt repayments to IMF. But this was exactly the opposite he said he would do if elected (do not forget that he tried three times – twelve years! - to get elected before winning the elections in 2002)…

c) Rate of unemployment

The rate of unemployment has, in fact, declined in Brazil. But this is due to millions of people, like me, who has given up looking for a job…

d) Bolsa-Família

They – the politicians – want to convince us all that this country had never been so prosperous and it even role-plays as a model for other underdeveloped countries. The Bolsa-Família program is nothing but pure government assistencialism that supplies the poor with only some changes – just a little amount of money - instead of employment and education, which would bring their dignity back.

By the way, Usui-san, you forgot to mention the taxes we pay in Brazil. This country is often referred to as the land of taxes. And what about the interest rates, the highest in the world? They are choking Brazil!

Yes, half of the Brazilians voters is in favor of Lula. But we need to remember that the other half is against him. This other half has been sending a message to Lula in these elections: “We are poor, but we are not dumb”.

Sincerely,

Levi F. Araújo

P.S.: Sumimasen…
