Irish Dance Families Off Topic Board
Welcome to the new board! Let us all strive for a polite board open to discussing topics other than Irish Dance (although a bit of that will work in, I expect). Anything that you wouldn't say in front of your Mother shouldn't be said here. Unfortunately there can be no discussion of politics on this board. We have tried and there are those among us who cannot treat this subject with civility and politeness; because of that all of us are being punished for the actions of a few.

Do you feel it is good care? Are you seen in a timely manner? Are referrals to specialists made when needed? Are surgeries deemed necessary done timely? Do you ever feel you are denied necessary care? Also I am interested to know how do the healthcare workers in your countries feel about the system. Are they paid well, treated well, are they respected?

I believe there may be a dead rodent/animal in the wall of my bedroom closet (2 walls of which, are "outside" walls). We have taken nearly EVERYTHING out of our large walk-in closet to determine that the dead thing is NOT, indeed, in the closet! My bedroom REEKS of rodent death! What can we do? Has anyone ever had this happen before? Thank you for any suggestions!

Even if this gets no replies, I have to write it down, lest I forget how it made me feel.
I was at the airport, coming home from a quick business trip when I witnessed a group near the entrance to the luggage carousels. A woman with 2 small children indicated to me that they were Muslim (the woman was wearing the headscarf and long garments) and I assumed African because the 2 men were tall and very dark skinned. (I believe the woman, the man in the suit and the children were one family.) As I walked by them, the man in the suit and the other, in a red shirt, were embracing tightly, as if they would never let go of one another and as if they had not seen each other in a very long time. They were weeping - sobbing - obviously unable to contain themselves. I could not imagine what could've stirred such emotion in these men, but everyone in the vicinity, especially the skycaps that help out, were silently and reverently observing the men. It was if we were all voyeurs into an intensely private moment. Speaking for myself, I was so drawn to the scene, near tears myself, yet did not want to invade on their privacy by staring - I got the distinct impression the tears and emotion were joyous, yet heartbreaking. All kinds of things went through my imagination. Were they brothers that had been separated? Had one saved the other's life? Were they being reunited after believing that they would never see each other again? They embraced and sobbed for some time. Then the woman hugged the man in the red shirt. Then the red shirted man picked up each child and embraced them in a long, tight hug, as if they were the most precious things in the world. Then the men hugged again and were sobbing even more. I started to worry that it was a goodbye rather than a hello - but I think it was a hello. I went to sleep thinking about it and woke up thinking about it. Incredible - words cannot explain the emotions I, and the people around me, experienced just by (covertly) observing those 2 men.

My adult-age son (and me) had a very scary experience ...thought I'd give a warning you can pass on to your teens/college/adult age kids. After being at an out-of-town party, drinking (alcohol drinks mixed w/Diet Coke), and staying up most of night (2 hrs of sleep), my son then apparently drank several cups of coffee & a Red Bull (regular size, not jumbo) and drove back to our town which took a few hours.

He then had hour+ of physical activity (was moving, so that means lifting heavy furniture, etc, in fairly warm weather) that I was helping him with. We took a break from the moving and he said he needed a short nap. He called me about 4-5 minutes later and said he felt so weird he thought he should see a doctor. He said he was afraid to fall asleep because he thought he wouldn't wake up.

My cousin was over, so we drove him towards an urgent care, but stopped at a fire station because it was on the way & my son was shaking, clammy, his eyes were darting every which way, fast heart beating, almost hyperventilating....he was petrified, and of course, so was I. Thank God for firemen & paramedics, because they immediately hooked him up to machines, checked him out, talked to him to calm him down, etc...and transported him to hospital in the ambulance. My son said he couldn't focus & his brain felt like it was going to "come unplugged like a computer when you pull it out of the wall"....

At the ER, they put him on IV & eventually gave him a sedative, did a CT scan on his brain, checked heart, blood, urine, etc.... Diagnosis turned out to be Caffeine Overdose. He obviously had a major bad reaction to not only the caffeine, but the combination of alcohol, no sleep, exertion, far too much caffeine. All tests turned out negative, he slept pretty good last night, is still tired today & his eyes are really sore, otherwise, feels pretty much like his old self.

The doctor told me those Red Bull-type drinks are way overloaded w/caffeine. I had no idea people could overdose. I've had the shakes from too many cups of coffee, but this was horrible. I also think the combination of everything together added to it. My son said he's pulled lots of all-nighters back in college, drinking lots of coffee, and occasional Red Bull, but he's never ever had something like this before. Anyway, I thought some of you might pass this along - I think most would be surprised to hear this sort of reaction.

The upset posts are primarily by one poster, supported by a second poster. The discussion parts of the posts are by multiple posters. I will keep an eye on things and see where they go. I will reflect what was said by another person on the board: if the topic upsets you, simply don't read or reply. On this board topics that are ignored fall off the page.

Also, just to point out that different people have differing views, I have a friend who removes hair for religious reasons. She is Muslim and I believe this is a common practice with Muslim women.

Any suggestions for a person wanting to read the whole Bible? I've attempted several times in year's past and never got too far...therefore, know the first part of old testament real well! Am not a church-going person, wasn't raised in the church, so my familiarity level is rudimentary. Would appreciate suggestions. I have several different versions of the Bible, from the story-book kind to the very traditional, hard to read ones. Thanks!

dd plays high school tennis and has a dancing friend who plays high school golf. Recently both experiences fantastic wins for the high school teams-both were considered underdogs on the day of the match. When it was over-and the wins were chalked up-these girls were so elated-they fought hard and the scores were purely based on their efforts. It was so much more rewarding than hoping someone else would prefer their style of playing over the competitor. Looking back now-even though my dd has accomplished much in dance(wq,top placer at most competitions)I am wondering if we should have focused our money,time and her efforts on the sports team aspect. She does love dance-but now sees that the competition component is somewhat biased-and on even her best dancing days,with no flaws at all-recognition is not guaranteed. I would not change a thing with her dance career-she has grown a lot-and found she needs some sort of competition in her life. But I will say her win this week was more exciting than any feis/oireachtas/Nationals placement-even after having played for 2+ non-stop hours!

My 13 year old has started displaying, what I would consider, mean girl mentality. I am not sure what my next step should be- details inside -- plus it's so petty, but mean, 12:33:12 09/11/09 Fri [19]
On top of her new tirates over non-negotiables (church, curfew), she seems to be mounting a full attack on what once was one of her best friends. This girl had a boyfriend last year (7th grade). Allegedly had made-out with the boy who dumped her because she would not go to 2nd base. She spent months trying to get him back. At that time, it seemed all the girls were behind her. This past week has just been unbelievable. Accusations of what this girl is doing to get the boys to notice her (sitting with her arms on her desk, flexed, to make her muscles more noticable. Now when I point out that when anyone sits like that, they make a muscle, and that I'd bet she isn't the only one sitting like that, I'm a moron. She wears shirts with the sleeves cut off or are very tight and shape reveleing. What makes that different from the tank tops that everyone else has been wearing or the tight fitted shirts with the store brand plastered across the boobs is beyond me too. Pitching a kniniption fit over girls hanging out with friends of the ex's new girl friend, seemed justifiable to me in a 8th grade mentality too. All of this was just jealous observations in my mind that with hypocritcal justifications, nothing substantiated to back up the allegations. Anything she said, I had what I believed were reasonable alternative ways to look at it. This morning, the big rumor was that the girl confided in another basketball player (girl) that she does round-offs in front of the guys, without tucking her shirt in, so she can show the boys what they are missing out on. She spent a good portion of last night trying to figure out who has spread this rumor and she is mad because everyone is protecting the one who started this and not protecting her. Now, really, if she actually told this to anybody, and it was only 1 person, then she would know who started it, so it seemed logical to me that she didn't tell it anyone, and again, it is someone who is jealous, perhaps of the attention she might be getting from the boys, or that she is a great ball player, or whatever, but that it has to stop, right now. That's when I got the 'you don't know what a sl*% she has become since she dated blahblahblah.' Well if she was a sl*% then the reason he broke up with her was false, and she hasn't dated anyone since, so that too seems to be inaccurate. I can't even begin to count the number of times we have discussed the total disrespect of the word, and her using it as she jumped out of the car at school, so I couldn't get another word in without making a scene in the parking lot. It is a small class, only 15 girls in the entire grade, they don't have real cliques per say to move between, they really only have each other. This has been an odd year, because there are 3 schools within 5 miles of each other (we actually live the furtherst from our school) and the girls are friends with kids from the other schools since they have met through park district teams. Now that they are all old enough to cross the street, and do things that don't involve a direct parent being involved, (riding bikes, going to the park, etc). This is where the 'new girl friend' and 'friends of' come into play because they are friends within the same neighborhoods, but different schools. I suspect this crap is coming from the new mix of girls, and not the girls that have been together since kindergarden, but maybe I am being naive about that.

I want to reach out to the girl's mother, but not sure that would be appropriate. I want to kill my daughter, which seems more appropriate. I can justify any alleged 'offenses' that have occured, even show similar actions from others, but to no avail. Her actions are quickly limiting what high school options we will allow her next year (all girls?, not with her current gang?). Facebook will probably be off limits for a while. And not sure how to handle the phone since WE put the importance of knowing where she is at all times and having the ability to get her anytime (stuck in a meeting, go to grandma;s after school, walk to dance, etc). Can you 'ground' mean girl mentallity out of a kid? Can you 'service hour' it out of them? I know this is when they start hating their parents (didn't happen with my older one, but . . .) but pushing the boundaries of respect for others right out the window. How would you handle?
