The fact that the whole nature of vampires is that they are resistant to change, has got to play a major part in it. As people grow older they adapt and change to the world around them, mentally and I would say to some extent physically as well. Vampires may adapt mentally as well, but their ability to adapt physically is non-existent. And as so much of the world revolves around physical appearance it's bound to effect the mindset of vampires.

The only way I could think that the Elders manage to live so long, is that they feel as though they have purpose, and say someone or something to anchor their minds to keep them from cracking as it were. I could see a couple of vampires deeply in love, and never wavering in that love, living and extremely long time. Or say a vampire running a sanctuary out of love and devotion, holding onto that purpose and using it to keep themselves mentally grounded.

AS for myself, I would probably slowly go insane, I'm too self conscious, and overly concerned with what other people think of me; so eventually my mind would break itself apart under the strain.
