Glad to see that y'all have, in the words of my favorite Specials song, "Simmered down." Lemmie chime in on this here China/spy plane debate. I say f- those guys. We have every right to declare that plane as hands-off to those guys. And China's argument that we shouldn't be spying on them. Gimmie a break. Those jackasses and their iron-fisted rule over their people should know all about spying and the such. And they say that they have proof that our spy plane intentionally collided with the Chinese fighter plane. Now, let's think about this rationally for a minute. Why the HELL would we intentionally crash a plane full of top-secret goodies that we don't anybody getting their grimy little mitts on into a warplane near a nation that we're spying on? Huh?! It makes so damn sense. Anyone notice the conincidence of this whole mess going down and we're getting ready to sell a bunch of anti-missle destroyers to Taiwan, which has the panties of President Jiang Zemin up in a bunch? Funny how China was reported to be storming the plane and playing with all of its toys in light of that, huh? China should be ashamed of itself. Poor, poor George W is probably sitting on the floor of the oval office right now crying because someone won't give him back his toy. I can hear him now, "Waaah. Waaahh." Anyway, this spy plane thing should be interesting. It should be a major kick in Bush's pants. Hopefully he'll pull it off with the style and grace of a seasoned vet. Unfortunately, he's not a seasoned vet. This incident will leave us all with an interesting view on GEorge W Bush, whether favorable or unfavorable. Can't wait to see what he does. You're missing the point though. This China mess isn't an exercise in how well Curious George handles things; it's a test of Powell and Dick "Angioplasty" Cheney to see how well THEY handle things. Bush is still busy playing trampoline on the Lincoln bedroom (not trampoline the way Clinton played it though, mind ya). You want to look at how Bush screwed something up, look at how he backdoored the EPA chief with his rhetoric on lessening enviornmental policies while the EPA head was making a speech at almost the exact same time on how the government needs to get tough on pollution. It's just the first real international event where the administration's actions weren't planned before even stepping into the office of president. I do feel that we should continue our spying, though, contrary to what our esteemed friend Blue Rubber Butt (I'm not even going to ask) believes. We are the final true superpower, and should stay that way the only way we know how: trying to keep tabs on everyone else while weilding our economic might. People will always be starving in the streets. That's a given. Also, our economy is dipping. I wouldn't say going downhill, as that denotes a massive swing. The US government is concerned with what takes place inside its own borders, but the US has never been an isolationist nation. Hopefully, it never will be. It's bad business. We were totally an isolationist nation for a long time. The only time we came concerned with foreign affiars is when it interfered with our Manifest Destiny (god I love that term. Sounds like the Prime Directive in Star Trek, don't it?) Good ol' Teddy Roosevelt tried to change that when he sent the Great White Fleet out to show the world how kick-ass our navy was (even though the fleet always broke down while on its Magical Mystery Tour). We tried forever to stay out of WWI because we didn't want to get involved (well, that and the fact that we were trying to make money off of all involved parties by selling weaponss...something we don't hear that much about these days in our revisionist history). It really wasn't until the Wilson's League of Nations (which we didn't join) in post WWI that we thought that we should take a policeman's role in the world. Sure, we were never as hands off as Switzerland is, but there was a time when we just wanted to shore up our borders and gnashed our teeth at anyone who came near us. In fact, that dude on the dollar bill, George Washington, said something in his farewell address about how we need to look after our own needs and stay the hell out of alliances with foreign nations lest we want to be forced into fighting the battles for those cheese eating surrender monkeys, the damn dirty French, or someone else. Isolationism wasn't really struck down until WWII. Speaking of history, anyone notice that today's the anniversary of the Unabomber, everyone's favorite hooded, sunglasses-wearing bozo, got locked up? It was American propaganda saying "Everything is all better now, we won as usual." There are always "Cold Wars" going on. Just because the big official Cold War with Communist countries, mainly Russia, is over, there will never cease to be "cold" feelings among nations in general. They don't have to be Communist, either. Soooo, thus we have the continued spying and political intrigue and what not. In my opinion, our government wanted us to believe we had reached the end of not only Cold War-era intrigue, but the end to all things like spying and spy planes and spy this and spy that. Spy vs. Spy. Bush should tell them "Give us our damn plane back or else!" SANCTIONS! Whatever it takes! Bush said he would be tougher on Communist China than Slick Willy, so let's see it! Also, for the most part, we did stay out of European MILITARY conflicts. But we have had so many intrusions into other countries that to call ourselves isolationist would be a flat out lie. For example, we have gone to s. america so many time they stopped counting. Also, I cannot contend with Anthony's association that this cuurent situation is another or rather continued cold world situations. It is true that in recent history, conflicts between nations are derived form government types, rather than territory or pride based issues of 200 years ago. And, it is probably also true, that this current china syndrome does come about primarily because of the old commie-dems battle. It is just that this is not at the same level the cold war fears were at. And there is a clear objective here. The unspoken war between US-Ussr of the past threatened the existance of life on earth. This conflict threatens cheap sneaker prices at K-Mart. CHina acted strangely, but they are not dumb, they will not risk future trade problems with us over something we both take part in (spying). I think it is a maneuver for the upper hand in the upcoming Taiwan issue. For those of you unaware, W soon has to decide what weapons to sell Taiwan. CHina of course does not want them to get much.
