Subject: Grades

11.1.1. The grades normally recognised and permitted by An Coimisiún are:
(a)Bun-ghrád („Beginners“)
(b) Tús-ghrád („Primary“)
(c) Meán-ghrád („Intermediate“)
(d) Ard-ghrád („Open“) but in countries outside of Ireland and Britain where grades other than those above are normally used, An Coimisiún may permit this practice to continue.

BUN-GHRÁD
12.1.1. Every Bun-ghrád competition shal be confined to competitors who have never previously won first place,
(a) for the dance specified for that competititon in any other registered competition in any other grade or under any age limit, or,
(b) in any solo competition designated a Championship (as defined in Rule 16.1.1. below) or a „Príomhchomórtas“ (as defined in Rule 16.2.1. below) except where a competitor has been regarded as a Bun-ghrád dancer in accordance with the provision of Rule 12.1.2.

12.1.2. Where a dancer has won first place in any of the competitions referred to at (a) or (b) in Rule 11.1.1. above and thereafter has failed to win first place in any registered solo competition in any grade, the teacher of that dancer, when a period of not less than two years has elapsed since the dancer has last won a first place in any registered solo competition, may apply to regional Dance Authority (Or to An Coimisiún in the absence of a functioning Authority in the Region) to have the dancer regarded as a „Bun-ghrád dancer“ with eligibility to compete in any dance in that grade for which he is eligible as regards age and place of residence. The Authority or An Coimisiún, having considered the competitive career of the dancer may authorise or refuse the regrading or may postpone a decision on the application for a period to be decided by the Authority or by An Coimisiún.

12.2.1. A Bun-ghrád competition must normally be confined to the Region, or part of the Region in which it is held. However in the case of competititons adjacent to the border between Regions entries may be accepted from both Regions, or part of both Regions, with the agreement of both Regional Authorities concerned or with the special permission of An Coimisiún.

12.3.1. Organisers may not specify more thjan one dance for any competition in the Bun-ghrád, i.e., there shall not be a choice of dances except in the case of a Príomhchomórtas (Premier Competition).

TÚS-GHRÁD
13.1.1. Every Tús-ghrád competition shal be confined to competitors who have never previously won first place
(a) for the dance specified for that competition in any other registered competition in any other grade or under any age limit other than in Bun-ghrád or
(b) in any solo competititon designated a „Championship“ (as defined in Rule 16.1.1. below) or a Príomhchomórtas“ (as defined in Rule 16.2.1. below) except where a competitor has been regarded as a Bún-ghrád dancer in accordance with the provisions of Rule 13.1.2.

13.1.2. Where a dancer has won first place in any of the competitions referred to at (a) or (b) in Rule 13.1.1. above and thereafter has failed to win first place in any registered solo competition in any grade, the teacher of that dancer , when a period of not less than two years has elapsed since the dancer has last won a first place in any registered solo compitition, may apply to the Regional Authority (Or to An Coimisiún in the absence of a functioning Authority in the Region) to have the dancer regarded as a „Bun-ghrád dancer“ with eligibility to compete in any dance in that grade for which he is eligible as regards age and place of residence. MEÁN-GHRÁD
14.1.1. Every Meán-ghrád competition must be confined to competitors who have never previously won first place under the upper age-limit specified for the competition (or under a higher age-limit) outside of Bun-ghrád and Tús-ghrád in
(a) a registered competition for the dance specified for the competition or
(b) any competition designated a „Championship“ as defined in Rule 16.1.1. or a Premier Competition“ as defined in Rule 16.1.2. except where the dancer has been regraded in accordance with Rule 14.1.2. or where the competition won is one to which Rule 11.2.1. applies.

14.1.2. Where a dancer has won first place in any of the competitions referred to at (a) or (b) in Rule 12.1.1. above and thereafter has failed to win first place in any solo competition in the Meán-ghrád or Ard-ghrád the teacher of that dancer, when a period of not less than two years has elapsed since the dancer has last won a first place in any registered solo competition in Meán-ghrád or Ard-ghrád may apply to the Regional Dance Authority (or to An Coimisiún in the absence of a functioning Authority in the Region) to have the dancer regraded as a „Meán-ghrád dancer“ with eligibility to compete in any competition in that grade for which he is qualified as regards age and place of residence. The Regional Authority or An Coimisiún, having considered the competitive career of the dancer, may authorise or refuse the regrading or may postpone a decision on the application for a period to be decided by the Authority or by An Coimisiún.

14.2.1. A Meán-ghrád competititon must normally be confined to the Region, or the part of Region, in which it is held. However, in the case of competitions adjacent to the border between Regions entries may be accepted from both Regions with the agreement of both Regional Authorities or with the special permission of An Coimisiún.

14.3.1. Organisers may not specify more than one dance for any competititon in the Meán-ghrád, i.e., there shall not be a choice of dances except in the case of Priomchomórtais (Premier Competitions).

ARD-GHRÁD
15.1.1. An Ard-ghrád competition shal be open to any dancer who satisfiies all the following qualifying conditions:
(a) is a pupil of a registered teacher (in the case of solo competitions);
(b) is a pupil of registered teacher or is over the age of 16 years and a member of a Registered Cumann (in the case of team competitions);
(c) is qualified to compete as regards age and place of residence;
(d) is not suspended from competitions under any Rule or by a decision of An Coimisiún or of a Regional Authority
(e) is entered with permission of his teacher or Cumann.
