I'm so glad to learn that you're not a bastard. This forum is making progress!

But you do seem intent on the idea that the Geoduck guy is. I've never met him but my experience of people in similar positions is very different.

Even the infamous Mike Jenks was described by people who worked for him many years ago when he was a lead hand, as one of the most caring guys in the forest who studied every tree as he tried to minimize the damage, but his Achilles heel was he a blew a fuse when people interfered and protested, and would clear cut everything in sight. All these years communities protesting his logging have been lighting that fuse...!

Another example is Plutonic Power, who are building a "green" energy generation system in the coast mountains east of here. They held an all day open house at Squirrel Cove a while ago. I went there around noon and was greeted by a very open and honest person who turned out to be Don McInnes, President and owner of Plutonic. We spent about an hour talking about his project. His wife had come up with the idea of green, environmentally friendly energy because it seemed like a good, worthy thing to do and Don was putting heart and soul into making it happen.

I've met hundreds of business people at that stage of their career who are invariably guarded and scarred from all the self interested people they have to deal with. They are usually self interested themselves at that point. The warmth of their personality has been drained from them by a harsh, uncaring world that they had no choice but to confront every day.

Don was remarkably different. He still had integrity and the kind of nothing to hide openness that comes from competence and straight dealings. The people around him echoed the same qualities. One of his most trusted people had given up a high profile career to join Don, and when I asked him why he said it was because of Don's qualities.

At around 5 pm the room filled with around 100 of our tree huggers and idealists who had been rallied to come and protest. With absolutely no knowledge of Don, his company or what he stood for they proceeded to insult his integrity and honesty as they tried to make it known he was not welcome. No doubt in their eyes they were conveying the same "reasonable" message you describe for the Geoduck issue!

The whole spectacle was so disgusting I almost took the floor and let them have it, but I thought better of it and left instead. Looking back I wish I had torn a strip off them. Despite the temporary shock everyone would have benefited when they got over it.

I'm sure most of our idealists and tree huggers left that day thinking they had taught another greedy bastard a lesson.

If you look on Plutonic's website < www.plutonic.ca > you'll see the kind of sincere relationship the person this community considered a bastard is building with Klahoose. It's a two way thing. The chief at Klahoose has a lot to do with it too.

I've never met the Geoduck guy but I did get a fleeting glimpse of him early in the squabble when he responded to the bogus claim about moored boats by offering to supply moorings for our use.

I'm betting he's another decent guy who has just been abused enough to react.
