All About Aries

Aries was named after the Greek god of war, and its patron planet is Mars, Aries's Roman counterpart. Astrologically speaking, the red planet has long been associated with 'red' qualities: assertiveness, aggression and passion. Those of you born with the Sun in this hotheaded, temperamental sign are also passionate, impatient and perpetually predisposed to leap first and look later ... if you look at all! But don't let anyone convince you that any of those traits are liabilities. In the right hands, they're all assets.

That impetuousness is part of what makes an Aries such charming, exciting company. It's a sign that's always brave enough to try anything once -- at least once. If you're an Aries, you're the perfect playmate; if you're not, you've probably enjoyed good times with one!

The impatience associated with the sign also fosters a straightforward trustworthiness. Aries are big fans of the 'cut to the chase' strategy, so anything that gets between point A (where they are) and point B (where they want to be) just won't do. This definitely includes lies and deceit. For the Ram, it's better to just say what's true and get it over with. Aries certainly aren't afraid to take responsibility for their actions. After all, what's the worst that could happen?

For Mars's favorite sign, stress equals excitement, excitement equals adrenaline, and adrenaline is what makes it all worth it! So, getting involved with an Aries, even platonically, isn't a job for the faint of heart. Romantically speaking, anyone who decides to take on a Ram had better be a brave, spontaneous and unencumbered companion. But an Aries will also want a worthy opponent, someone who's not afraid to disagree with their partner -- or with the rest of the world -- when the need arises. Aries are natural-born warriors who respect that quality in others. In short, anyone with fearful tendencies just won't do.

An Aries's lucky partner will be rewarded with a life full of adventure, passion and surprises. To say there will never be a dull moment when Aries is involved isn't even scraping the surface!

March 20: The Sun enters Aries
The Sun enters Aries, an event that marks the Spring Equinox for those above the equator, and the Autumnal Equinox for those below. Each year at this time, we begin a new season and a new journey. It's time to take action! Begin something, whether you want to start a business, embark on a different career path or simply turn over a new leaf. If you can draw on the courageous and pioneering attributes of this sign, you'll have everything you need to make a fresh start!

March 21: The Sun conjuncts Uranus
Since Uranus recently entered Aries, the Sun makes an immediate contact with this planet representing change. As you embark on a new path, keep in mind that Uranus brings plenty of surprises. Sometimes you don't end up on the path you thought you'd be traveling -- but this may be a good thing! It's time to shake up your life and do something different.

March 26: Venus conjuncts Neptune
Are you ready for romance? Venus represents personal love while Neptune represents spiritual love. You can't help but open your heart now, and you're likely to see beauty in the least expected places; just make sure you bring a discerning eye to the object of your affection! Have you read Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream? If not, this is a good time to become acquainted with this masterpiece. Most importantly, make the most of this dreamy energy by spending special time with people you love.

March 27: Venus enters Pisces
Venus continues yesterday's soulful theme as she enters spiritual Pisces. Whereas Venus's previous transit through Aquarius highlighted the friendship qualities of love, Pisces is a Water sign and is wholly immersed in the feeling world. This can be a very romantic time. No involved conversations are necessary -- it's what you feel that counts. This transit offers a great chance to meet your soul mate or strengthen the spiritual bonds of an existing relationship.

March 28: Jupiter opposes Saturn
Last year on May 22, these two planets representing our social and economic worlds opposed each other in the respective signs of physical and spiritual health, Virgo and Pisces. Now they oppose each other once again -- this time in Aries and Libra, the axis of relationships. Jupiter in Aries urges you to take the initiative and be brave and bold, but Saturn in Libra requires you to be aware of how you relate to others. Mix action with fairness for the best results.

March 30: Mercury turns retrograde
Doesn't it seem like just yesterday that Mercury was retrograde? Although this planet retrogrades three times a year, it occurs often enough that it may seem by the time you're done with one retrograde, the next is around the corner! This time Mercury retrogrades in feisty Aries. Impulsive plans and creative ideas get a second look as you assess what you'll need to put your plans into action. Don't try to push through anything you haven't reviewed! Record the pros and cons of everything, since you'll notice that your mind won't settle on anything one hundred percent! If possible, avoid buying communication-related products such as computers and phones; if you do have to purchase these items now, keep receipts. If you're traveling, double-check your reservations and bring a good book to read and plenty of games for the kids in case you're delayed. If you know which house (or houses) in your natal chart Mercury is traveling through, apply this review to that area of your life. And of course, defer decision-making until after Mercury turns direct on April 23. This time is famous for people making mistakes!

April 1: Mars enters Aries
If you've wanted to get your plans into motion but haven't been able to galvanize yourself, the wait is over: Mars in Aries brings an abundance of energy! Just make sure you have a project to pour all that energy into -- otherwise, you may find yourself being argumentative for no reason. Although Aries is the sign of the pioneer, its mythological name -- like that of Mars -- is the god of war. If you stay focused on what you want to achieve, you'll go far since anything is possible now. Make this time work for you!

April 3: New Moon in Aries
This year, the new Moon in Aries connects with the Jupiter/Saturn opposition, joining Jupiter in Aries and opposing Saturn in Libra. You have more than enough enthusiasm to initiate anything you want ... and you have people cheering you on! However, others are cautioning you to be mindful of your relationships and not become too self-focused. If you can maintain a balance between the two, you'll be able to accomplish a lot. This is a good time to take the necessary steps to further your goals and dreams. Just keep in mind that Aries is also the sign of the warrior, so be thoughtful of others while advancing your own causes.

April 4: Neptune enters Pisces
It's big news when slow-moving Neptune enters a new sign, since it takes 165 years to orbit the Sun. For the last 14 years, Neptune has been transiting through Aquarius -- the sign of independence, freedom and equality. Now Neptune enters the sign it rules, Pisces, a transit that will intensify themes of spirituality, inspiration and idealism. There's little that's logical or sensible about this mystical planet, which itself urges us to be more inclusive and spiritual in our dealings with the material world. As you focus on your personal plans, maintain a big-picture view and do what you can to develop a more spiritual life. For extra insight, examine the house in your own chart through which Neptune is traveling.

April 6: The Sun conjuncts Jupiter
Once a year, the Sun shines its light on optimistic Jupiter; in 2011, these two planets conjunct in the Fire sign of Aries. Are you ready to reach for the stars or fight for a cause? This is a transit for movers and shakers! Bold Aries represents the pioneer and the risk-taker, making this a wonderful transit in which to initiate plans or a project. The generosity of Jupiter is legendary, so if you can combine your goals with service to others, you'll receive lots of help. And if you're ready to take a risk and do something amazing, this is your time!

April 9: Pluto turns retrograde
Retrograde periods always help us review. But first, the intensification of energy at the time the retrograde begins is known for correlating with events that are quite dramatic. In fact, it may be these crucial events that cause us to reflect and review. Pluto's turnaround in ambitious Capricorn asks you to focus on your goals and examine what you want to build or accomplish. Just as nations reform government programs and plan to rebuild bridges, roads and businesses, you too can transform your own infrastructure! Look at the house in your own chart where Pluto is retrograding for much more information. This retrograde period will last until September 16.

April 11: Mars squares Pluto
This aspect tells the story of a power struggle. Mars in Aries is ready to advocate for its causes and goals. Pluto in Capricorn, meanwhile, is obsessive about building properly and thoroughly. Pluto represents the person or entity in charge, and it is to them that you must present your case. Expect to be challenged -- and if you're impulsive, hot-headed or too self-focused, expect to lose! This is dictatorial energy, so be sure to curb your domineering side and instead demonstrate your talent for sidestepping control freaks. How you handle challenges and disagreements at this point will say a lot about you.

April 11: Mercury conjuncts Jupiter
On March 15, communicative Mercury formed a conjunction with Jupiter. Now that the former planet is retrograde, these two planets conjunct once more, offering you an opportunity to continue a conversation or idea that needs a few finishing touches. The main thing to keep in mind is to take extra care in what you say or share with others. Don't make the mistake of saying something you shouldn't -- or blurting out secrets!

April 17: Full Moon in Libra
A full Moon in Libra is normally a time to tune into your relationship ideals and be mindful of maintaining balance between yourself and others. However, this particular full Moon has a few built-in pitfalls. Warrior Mars and talkative Mercury oppose Saturn and square Pluto during this full Moon, making this a potent time for people to challenge each other and be argumentative. If you find yourself becoming overly emotional, think twice before you act. Simply take a deep breath -- or even a cold shower -- and give yourself the chance to compose yourself thoughtfully and intelligently.

April 18: Mars opposes Saturn
You've gone as far as you can, and now you need to seek alternatives or re-assess your plans. Mars is the action planet and Saturn is the rule-maker. Sometimes, the limitations of our own minds -- as well as everything from authority figures and governmental regulations to stop signs and red lights -- seem to hinder instead of help. But don't fret! Pausing to examine your activities can be essential to your success. Take advantage of this important transit by remembering that maturity helps -- and so does the possessing the capacity to work hard.

Enjoy the Sun's transit through Aries!

AstroLesson: The Astrology of Equinoxes and Solstices

Astrologers consider equinoxes and solstices to be important times that set a tone for the three months that follow. Since these events mark the seasons, Western astrology uses them as foundations for the zodiac.

Although you've likely heard the terms "equinox" and "solstice" before, you may not know exactly what these quad-annual events are, or when they fall on the calendar. The Spring or Vernal Equinox occurs on or near March 21, while the Fall or Autumnal Equinox falls on or near September 23; the Summer Solstice happens on or near June 21, and the Winter Solstice occurs on or near December 21.

These four points correlate with zero degrees Aries (Spring Equinox), zero degrees Cancer (Summer Solstice), zero degrees Libra (Fall Equinox) and zero degrees Capricorn (Winter Solstice). In turn, these four cardinal points, which make a grand cross in the zodiac, mark our seasons, with the beginning point being zero degrees Aries -- or as we call it, the first day of spring! (Of course, in the Southern Hemisphere, this point marks the first day of autumn.)

On the two equinox dates, day and night are considered to be equal (or near equal) in length. The term comes from the Latin word aequus, meaning "equal."

Equinoxes occur when the Sun is directly over the Earth's Equator, while solstices are marked when the Sun reaches its northernmost and southernmost extremes at the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, respectively. At these times, the tilt of the Earth's axis is oriented away from the Sun. The Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn are two imaginary lines, or circles of latitude, around the Earth; the Tropic of Cancer is set approximately 23 degrees and 26 minutes north of the Equator, while the Tropic of Capricorn is located the same distance south of the Equator.

Now that you know about these important times and points, pay special attention to the events that unfold during the day as the Sun enters any of the four cardinal signs.
