In reply to: Hogarth 's message, "What do you think about Letterman's sexual joke about Sarah Palin's daughter?" on 08:39:27 06/11/09 Thu

if Rush Limbaugh had made the exact same comment about one of the Obama girls. The outrage would be front page news.

She is right. He is a 60 year old man making jokes about the rape of a 14 year old girl. Disgusting. If it was 10 years ago and the joke had been about Chelsea Clinton he would be gone by now.

I think Sarah's response was excellent.... and Letterman DID NOT apoligize. I hope he gets what he deserves. Cancel his ass and let him fade to oblivion. Unfortunately, he will get probably higher ratings because of the double standard that the left has regarding the Palin's. The fact that some people are sitting at home enjoying his brand of humor is very sad.

Sarah's response to the non-apology this morning is perfect. To paraphrase: She will not give Letterman the ratings boost that would happen were she to appear and also feels it would be best to keep her daughter as far away from him as possible.

Regardless of whether you think he was talking about the 14 year old or the 18 year old, I think everyone is in agreement that the "joke" was inappropriate and not funny. Republicans also say stupid things that are meant to be a joke but aren't funny by any stretch of the imagination. For example (I can't remember how to post a link, so cut and paste if it isn't):

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2009/06/14/2009-06-14_pol_gorilla_is_related_to_first_lady.html

I don't understand how people are trying to turn this into a political issue. As far as I know, David Letterman isn't a spokesperson for the Democratic Party. While I believe he most definitely has a liberal slant to most things political, he shouldn't be in the same category as Rush Limbaugh or any other political commentator; he doesn't appear at political conventions or speak for the Democratic party at large like Rush does. He's a comedian. He tries to make people laugh and sometimes he steps in a huge, steaming pile.

I can see where Letterman has a point. Like most people, when I heard about the joke, I immediately thought of Bristol. I had forgotten that Sarah Palin had a 14-year-old daughter. Yeah, their writers should have been a little more vigilant about getting the facts straight. But, IMHO, if you think that David Letterman's joke actually condones statutory rape and, therefore all liberals/democrats must also condone it, you're up in the night.
