Subject: What do you tell peeps when they ask who you voted for?

My mom already asked me, and I don't really want to tell her. She kind of TOLD me to vote for McCain...said if I wanted any inheritance, I'd better, because Obama would establish large taxes when peeps inherit from others...I don't even understand how there can BE an inheritance tax because that money has already BEEN taxed. Seems like double taxation to me...

Anyway, I teased my mom that I was going to "write-in" Ron Paul, and she got mad at me!

At the risk of sounding arrogant, there's no doubt Obama will be the next president (if he makes it that far), so her getting mad at my "personal protest" is kind of moot, and clearly out of line...in my opinion.

http://www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck/would_obama_tax_my_profits_if_i.html

It debunks and outlines various tax plans (including inheritance tax) proposed by both candidates.

[> I tell them I am voting for Obama but my vote is really no one's business but mine -- Terry, 04:48:09 10/26/08 Sun [1]

At work the topic comes up between me and Amy quite often. She was actually leaning toward voting for Obama but her husband will not vote across party lines and they are registered Republicans (I think that is stupid).

I have sent her to factcheck.org and she's read all about the tax plans but she is convinced Obama will cost her and her husband the 10K tax refund they get every year (they over withhold) and raise their taxes. I don't know how much they make but apparently they fall into the category of paying more instead of less. Plus she doesn't want to "make James mad". That is a mentality I cannot relate to as I don't think it is anyone's business who you vote for, even your husband's.

I'm not convinced Obama will win in Florida but he's got my vote, mom's vote, Greg's vote and Chuck's vote. :-)

There are ways around that. My mom and her brothers didn't pay a cent when they inherited Grandma's estate including her house in Winter Park that was paid off years ago. If that is really her only objection why not offer to see a financial planner together and discuss your options?

voting for someone who is going to raise taxes, then paying someone to help you dodge them?

Hire the people who can get them out of paying as much of their taxes as possible?

Besides, Doni wasn't all that concerned about the taxes, but if some estate planning would calm her mom concerns then it may be worth it.

I know my mom put me on as co-owner on her accounts because she didn't want them getting tied up in probate when she dies.

but I know it seems counter-productive.

If anything they will stay the same or go down.

I'm not sure I get your point.

Good naturedly, of course:
Mom, you can't ask who I voted for, there are laws against that! and then change the subject.

I wish I'd thought of that.

She's seen parts of factcheck, that's a great site, ITA SB...

And ITA Terry...mom's had her 'living trust' in place since like the mid-90s...

I've tried and tried to convince them they are not 'targets' unless they have an income over $250K...and they don't right now, being retired, and all.

I tell people I am voting for the white guy.
Mc Cain they say...
No, I say, I am voting for the white half of Obama.

I don't know anyone who is ballsy enough to ask that question. Those who know me well enough to ask any questions related to my personal life already talk politics with me, so they know all that stuff anyway. Those who don't, don't ask.

If someone asked me though, I'd probably say, "Why do you ask?" That's my standard response to nosey questions like "When are you having babies?" and "Have you gained/lost weight?" Usually that makes the asker uncomfortable enough to hem and haw and drop the question.

more personal than the relationship I have with the person asking the question.

to just answer such questions with, "Wow, what a rude question! You must be so embarrassed."
