I'm not your Pal, I wouldn't want to be, and you have just said the prelim is basically worthless therefore glory hunting could not be the reason they perform. They perform because the rules state they can.
It's negative attitudes like yours that ruin the spirit of Irish dancing.
I clap for all dancers regardless to there grade, a trophy does not define the dancer.
I think we should be congratulating them for dancing on the equivalent of an ice rink and waiting patiently while the floor was fixed, this shows strength of caricature, I personally congratulate all the ladies and men for their wonderful display of dance yesterday under the circumstances.
