SHARON TAYLOR ACADEMY OF IRISH DANCINGCODE OF CONDUCT AND AGREEMENT

Introduction

Welcome to the Sharon Taylor Academy of Irish Dancing.

This Code of Conduct reflects our school values: respect, commitment, resilience, and a passion for learning and growth. All dancers and families are expected to uphold these values and contribute to a positive, disciplined, and supportive environment. By participating in and registering with our school, you agree to uphold these standards to help foster a respectful and high-achieving dance community.

GENERAL CODE OF CONDUCT1. Respect for Teachers

This section outlines the expectations for how dancers and families should interact with teachers. Our teachers are fully qualified professionals who lead with knowledge, experience and dedication. Their guidance must be trusted and respected.

• Teachers are the leaders of the learning environment. Their expertise and decisions regarding class structure, choreography, and competition entry must be respected.
• Feedback or queries should be directed outside of class time through appropriate channels.• Gossip, criticism, or disrespectful comments toward teachers, staff, or volunteers is unacceptable.

• Trust the process, even when you don’t immediately understand a decision, confident that it is part of a long-term developmental plan. The teacher’s sole objective is to guide each dancer with consistency, fairness, and encouragement so that every individual reaches their maximum potential.2. Commitment and ResilienceSuccess in Irish dancing requires consistency, effort, and perseverance. This section explains the level of commitment we expect from our dancers, especially in terms of attendance, attitude, and preparation.

• Regular attendance at class and workshops is expected.

• Late arrivals and early departures must be pre-approved.

• Recommended feiseanna and competitions must be attended to maintain consistency andteam spirit.

• Dancers are expected to work hard, apply corrections, and stay resilient in the face of challenges.3. Student ResponsibilitiesEvery dancer is responsible for contributing to a positive, safe, and respectful training environment. These guidelines help dancers understand their role in creating a supportive school culture.

• Arrive on time with the correct kit, a positive attitude and be prepared to give 100% effort at all times.• Inform your teacher in advance of lateness or absence.

• Stay in designated dance areas during class.

• Behave respectfully and safely towards all peers and staff.

• Show respect for teammates, appreciate all abilities, and never engage in bullying or exclusion.

• Demonstrate excellent and virtuous conduct at feiseanna and events. Represent the school with dignity.

• No drama, gossip, or disruptive behaviour will be tolerated. We expect grace in both success and disappointment.

• Take care of equipment, facilities, and costumes.• All dancers are expected to maintain high standards of personal hygiene when attending classes, workshops, and feiseanna. This includes wearing clean practice gear, using deodorant, and ensuring hair is tidy and appropriately secured for dance. Good hygiene shows respect for teammates, teachers, and the shared dance environment.

• Smoking, alcohol, drug use or inappropriate language/behaviour is strictly prohibited when representing the school.

• Online conduct must reflect school values. Bullying, exclusion, or negativity in chats or social media will not be tolerated.

• Zero tolerance for bullying, whether in person or online. Any instances will be addressed immediately and seriously.4. Parent/Guardian ExpectationsParents and guardians play a vital role in reinforcing our values and supporting dancer development. This section outlines how families can contribute positively to the school community, both in and out of class.

• Reinforce values of punctuality, respect, and commitment at home.

• Avoid scheduling holidays during critical training periods.

• Communicate feedback via proper channels, directly with teachers at an appropriate time, mutually agreed by both parties. This should not be before, during or immediately after class.

• Model respect and kindness to all children and adults.• Do not gossip or speak negatively about the school, teachers, or dancers. This is considered a serious breach.

• Be punctual with drop-off/pick-up and inform staff of attendance issues in advance.

• Conduct at all feiseanna must reflect the school’s values. All dancers and families represent our community and must act with dignity, kindness, and composure at all times.

• No disruptive or dramatic behaviour at events. We expect grace in both success and disappointment.

• Timely payment of fees is required. Late payments may incur an additional fee. Please do not challenge payment requests that have already been clearly communicated and agreed upon.

• Respect the boundaries of personal contact. Teachers' personal phone numbers are for essential use only. Please avoid casual messaging to our personal numbers and/or social media and instead use the school email address: idclasses@outlook.com

• Group chats must be used responsibly. Overuse, venting, or negative commentary in these spaces creates confusion and unnecessary drama. Any school-wide updates will be shared through official communication channels. Confidentiality is a MUST and anyone found to be sharing private school information will be in serious breach of our Code of Conduct and will result in disciplinary action.

• All communication with feis organisers must come directly from teachers or a designated school representative. Parents, Guardians and dancers should never contact feis organisers independently.

• All families must agree to comply with fundraising expectations set out by the school committee. Fundraising is a key part of our school culture and supports all dancers. Participation demonstrates commitment to the whole community. The Fundraising Committee will share expectations and rules regularly throughout the year.

• Parents/Guardians must not contact other dance schools, vendors, or individuals about dresses or costumes without previous discussion with and approval of teachers. Any queries or arrangements regarding new or second-hand dresses must be sent via idclasses@outlook.com

• Displays and exhibitions (whether personal or for school fundraising purposes) must feature only dancers who are currently enrolled in studio classes. If you wish to include individuals who are no longer attending classes—such as former students or retired dancers—prior approval must be obtained from the teaching staff.5. Health, Safety, and Wellbeing
The wellbeing of our dancers is a top priority. This section ensures that all health, safety, and contact protocols are followed to support our dancers both physically and emotionally.

• Inform staff of any medical or wellbeing issues that may affect participation.• Keep your child home when unwell as per their educational setting guidelines.

• Ensure that you are reachable during class and contact details are current.

• For the safety of all our students, our studio is nut-free. We have individuals with serious nut allergies, and even trace amounts can pose a risk. Please carefully check the packaging of any food you bring, as nuts can sometimes be hidden in ingredients like sauces, pesto, spreads, and snacks. If any food containing nuts is found, it will be confiscated to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone.

• For the safety of our students, we have individuals with severe nut allergies, and even trace amounts can be hazardous. As a precaution, we ask that you do not bring any sprays, lotions, or similar products into the studio. Many of these items contain nut-derived ingredients, and when airborne, they can pose a serious risk.6. • Represent the school in a positive and respectful way online.

• Do not discuss school issues or members on social media platforms.

• Engaging in online forums or anonymous chat groups is strictly prohibited. Any involvement in such platforms, particularly where negativity, gossip, or inappropriate commentary is shared, will be considered a serious breach of our Code of Conduct and will result in disciplinary action.8. Honest and Responsible CommunicationClear and respectful communication is essential for resolving concerns and maintaining trust. This section explains how dancers and families should raise issues and share feedback constructively. To protect the integrity of our school and the wellbeing of all involved:

• Dancers are expected to be honest and accurate when sharing feedback or comments from class. It is important that tone, context, and intent are not misrepresented when speaking to parents or others outside class.

• If a dancer feels upset, confused, or uncomfortable about something said or done in class, we ask that they speak directly with a teacher (or have a parent arrange this) so it can be clarified constructively and effectively.
• Teachers are committed to giving feedback that is helpful to improve a dancer’s performance. It is given in a respectful, educational, and never personal manner. Dancers should understand that corrections are part of the learning and accepted as being constructive.

• Parents are encouraged to seek clarification directly from teachers rather than making assumptions based on second-hand reports. This ensures that any concerns are addressed accurately and in good faith.

• Deliberately twisting, exaggerating, or weaponising comments made in class will be considered a serious breach of this agreement. It can harm trust, damage relationships, and will be addressed through formal disciplinary steps if necessary.9. Disciplinary PolicyTo maintain a high standard of conduct, a clear process is in place for addressing behaviour that falls short of expectations. This section outlines the steps that may be taken if the expected level of conduct is not maintained.

• Verbal Warning – A reminder of expectations.• Written Warning – Formal notice of concern.

• Suspension – Temporary removal from classes or feis’/events.

• Expulsion – Permanent removal for serious or repeated misconduct.10. Manners and GratitudePoliteness, appreciation, and team spirit are core to our school ethos. This section encourages dancers to show gratitude for the time and energy given by teachers, assistants, and volunteers.

• Dancers are expected to show consistent politeness, kindness, and gratitude to all teachers, assistants, and volunteers.

• A simple thank you goes a long way. Teachers dedicate extensive hours not only in class, but also during feis weekends, travel days, and major competitions to ensure dancers are supported, prepared, and encouraged. – Students should acknowledge the additional time and energy that staff dedicate, often at the expense of their own families and relaxation time.

• Acts of appreciation - verbal, written, or through respectful conduct - help build a school community rooted in mutual respect and team spirit.

• Repeated displays of rudeness, entitlement, or lack of appreciation will not be disregarded and may be addressed as a breach of this code.
