Online Posting #9 for March 30, 2008

I thought that the part of the chapter that discussed goal-setting, planning, and self-monitoring was interesting. The book suggests that these are the “most important” aspects of adolescent achievement. I am inclined to agree with this. I think that the ability to set your own goals and work towards those goals, are things that adults struggle with. I believe that they are keys to success.

I struggle with the fact that my students are severely deficient when it comes to goal-setting, self-monitoring, and planning. Many of them struggle with the small responsibilities of bringing their materials to class on a daily basis. At the beginning of the year every student was given a planner and before the end of the six weeks, few students had their planner.

I realized that these techniques have to be taught somewhere, and the best place for them is in the school. Good teachers find ways to help students develop these skills on their own, but I was taught how to do these things at home from my parents. I wonder if the idea of goal-setting, planning, and self-monitoring are values that are taught at different stages according to their perceived importance.
