Great post Timothy. I can relate with this because unlike in your family I don't ever remember being taught these things and I don't remember them from school either, although I might have just not been paying attention. In fact this whole concept of setting goals and creating plans to accomplish them was completley foreign to me until I came accross the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (I think they have one for teenagers as well)some time in college. This simple notion was somewhat life changing for me and I agree that the ability to do this is extremely important for our students to learn and would positively effect their level of achievement.
